Need help with RJ-58 belt clutch assembly

Recommended Posts

WheelHorse79

The person who "restored" my RJ-58 before I bought it configured the belt clutch assembly wrong.  When the pedal is released, the arm with the idler pulley goes down on the drive belt, instead of going upward to engage the drive belt.  Could someone please post some pictures of the belt clutch assembly on both sides of the transmission along with the engagement linkage?  I also need to know what the diameter of the belt clutch idler pulley is too.  Thanks in advance for your help.

That is correct for a RJ with the 5003 transmission. The idler is flat and rides on the back of the belt. The Suburbans had a V pulley idler and operated as you mentioned. :)

These photos of the right and left side of the RJ Wheel Horse  clutch and idler arm  with pulley (with belt cover still on)  may help you.  The idler arm pulley is 2 inches wide!

Great pics, thanks!  I think the idler pulley on my clutch arm is too big (2.5" in diameter).  I'll try to replace it with the correct one.  What would be the best way to pick up one?  I'm assuming it's NLA from Toro or Parts Tree.

Check with Surplus Warehouse in Nebraska.   I think they have a 2 1/4  but  almost two .   It is hard to find an original.

Thanks, I think I found a flat 2.0" pulley on Ebay that will work.  Looking through the Red Square archives, apparently another member used this same pulley successfully on his RJ-58.
