difference between B and C series

Recommended Posts

I'm a greenhorn when it comes to the Horses....but I'm learning. I've picked up and mechanically gone through three this year... 1973 Commando 800, a 1973 8 8speed, and a 1987 310-8. I have a chance to get a c-165 8 speed that sounds good to me...no attachments. Other then the obvious power difference.....what would be the size and differences between the 310-8 and the c-165....and what are the differences between the B and C series?

Well your difference between the 310 and a 165 other than a whole lot more horse is   not a whole lot. You have the obvious hood style change, rear fender pan if the 165 still has the plastic one on. The 8 speed should be the same except the 310 might have 1" axels instead of the 1 1/8" like the 165. I am not sure if the 310 came with the smaller front wheels. Maybe someone will chime in here that knows.

The b and c difference is usually the b has less whistles and bells, more of a stripped down unit.

Early b were 8 or 10hp, usually with four speed. They are the precursor to later b series which went to pressed steel chassis, vertical shafts Briggs, and a 4 speed peerless or 6 speed foote transmission.

Also some of the early b's used a mid length frame like the commando 800.

The 77 b80 I had used the standard long frame, not sure what year the mid length was done away with?

How much shorter is the Commando 800 frame then the 310-8 frame?

The B/C difference discussion can go on for pages. The best way to answer the question is if you have two models that you want to compare, the differences are easily explained. But over the whole line, there are many differences in just the B's alone.

The 310-8 usually came with the 6 inch front wheels because the mower decks used required them to be lower in the  front
