It's going to be a long slow process but the 701 is slowly starting to come together...big shout out to Stevebo for hooking me up with a dash panel for it.

Yes it is...I belong to several Internet forums for a variety of different things and RedSquare is by far the most friendly and helpful out of them all...this is the only forum that I have paid the support fee on without blinking an eye and will do so again in another six months. Love the friendly people here and all the super helpful advice.

Starting to look a little more like a tractor again...got the dash panel put on and bolted the hood back on...its been off and laying in the front seat of the 66 Ford ever since I got it...I was afraid these high Oklahoma winds would blow it away. Also dug around amongst the mouse turds in the toolbox and found the battery hold in strap so put that on as well. If I could find an engine for this thing then progress could really start moving along.

Kohler k161 with starter/generator . You should be able to find something, Cubs, deers, and who knows what else they were used on.

A k181 would work also I believe. Our there always the option of a reporwer with a different engine. People been having luck with the

HF predator engines . They have a 6.5 and 8hp engine . I picked up a 2.5hp for $79 and a 6.5hp for $99 just to have.

Yes I've been looking for either a k161 or k181 but so far haven't found anything even remotely close to me :( guess that's one of the disadvantages of living out in the middle of nowhere. The thought of a repower has crossed my mind too...that may be what I end up doing if I can't find a reasonably priced Kohler somewhere near me...this tractor will probably never see any work...just driving in parades pulling my mobile advertising sign I'm building...the 1277 is my workhorse

Don't give up on finding a 7 or 8 horse Kohler so quickly. Show and swap meet season is open now... make sure to visit all the spring swaps and tractor show/swap meets you can. There's almost always a few engines or something with an engine on it that you can find... keep your eyes open for old air compressors, generators, tillers and such... sometimes even beat up old golf carts. But don't overpay either just because it has a little old Kohler.... you may end up swapping some parts to get it to fit up right.  But also if it's like you said and it's just going to be a parade tractor... a repower engine is a reasonably cheap alternative.

In my neck of the woods stuff is pretty hard to find...and I stay so busy working all the time finding the time to work on my tractors is tough, much less finding time to attend shows/swaps LOL

WHX??

Good points guys, sometimes we overlook the obvious just beacuse it isn't painted red. Lot of other machines used Kohlers so don't be shy around the boneyards & such. Nose around & ask if they got and old stuff hiding in weeds. I sometimes feel your pain about living out in the middle of nowhere and not having the time!

To repower my RJ-58 (replacing the incorrect Briggs), I found a K91-T on e-bay from a generator that had either just been rebuilt or had low hours on it.  The seller offered free shipping which was a bonus!  A little red paint and exhaust modification, then the K91-T will look like it came on the RJ-58 from the factory.

I replaced my original 7hp Kohler off my 701 with a 8hp new long block. The original ran but smoked. I still have it..
