"Good Friday" 520H clean up

Recommended Posts

WVHillbilly520H

Today was very productive got all the wiring buttoned up, wheel weights installed with the plastic anniversary wheel covers from my '97, mower deck washed scraped and bottom painted and a little touch up on the top(till I get more time to do a better job), engine oil and filter changed with new rubber seal installed, new spark plugs installed, and new belts on deck spindles and PTO drive, installed sharp spare blades from my other deck (until I get the correct new ones), put hydro drive belt cover back on and hung the deck now patiently waiting on the new clutch/neutral switch to get here to install and this stallion is ready to mow some terra firma, 520 ready and a diesel to go, ...  Almost forgot need to fix the muffler spout/elbow too but I don't believe it'll hurt too much to run as is for now (one would think working in a major North American aftermarket exhaust factory I could find a suitable replacement but we don't seem to make mufflers or pipe that small  lots of components coming in from overseas these days), Jeff.

Well the switches showed up today, installed and I mowed for 2+ hrs this morning all in all this 520 was worth the $1200 + parts and "sweat" labor and head scratching, ran smooth and never bogged down in 8" wet grass this project is done (except the muffler spout) till I decide to paint or not , and pics of before and after neutral switch couldn't believe I missed that for weeks trying to track down an electrical problem vs a simple mechanical one, oh well it's fixed now,Jeff.

Made to a custom exhaust shop today, really cool guy, bent and cut a piece of 1.5" tubing (for free :D) for the muffler spout on the 520 now to get it on there I think I can handle that,Jeff.

Hopefully it'll last me me out if the muffler itself holds up, 15+ years sitting out sure didn't help that stallion none but he's in a better stable now, maybe if I get the diesel going I'll actually to a little "custom" paint on the hood, fenders and side panel since the rest is still reasonably "red" yet,Jeff.

Ok after about 7 hrs on this horse, I think I finally got the yard in decent shape, but that Simplicity seat has to go it doesn't have slider tracks and I'm not to happy with the turf tires on my hilly lot, also the mule drive has a bad bearing noisy and by the time I got done today burned up my cheap aftermarket PTO belt (the grass was 8"-10" tall tough and wet my bad for letting it get that way) (been mowing #5 highest setting but still lower than my F-I-L's Kubota ZTR) but I have the one from my '97 till I get that fixed but the deck is super quiet, well anyways a few shots of the "aftermath" of mowing and sweeping lol,Jeff.      Pic #8 down is what my F-I-L leaves after mowing I usually have to "bale" up his "hay" as well as mine, he doesn't get it that leaving it lay just makes it worse to now the next time I think that helped burn PTO belt up trying to remow his grass mat,.

Your place looks great. You don't have a basement do you?  Looks like you'd get water in the basement when it rained a lot.

THANK YOU SIR,No basement wish we did then I would probably have ALL my :wh:'s hiding in there lol, if I hadn't been so stubborn about leaving the cab and 2 stage on my '97 520 I probably wouldn't have had the trouble mowing so late but oh well, and her step-dad does help but that Kubota just doesn't mow as low as the horses on high...but come end of summer plan on putting another carport up where the gray shed in a box is behind the house for the herd,Jeff

Figured I would post an update on this horse since getting it back up to working condition, only 1 problem during the mowing season fuel pump went bad got one on eBay from "Flip MFG" same as the Onan but 2-3 for the price of 1, also bought a new seat from Northern Tool basically the O.E. from TORO for $120 to the door, after all this mowing this spring/summer clocked from 236-292 hrs now,all in all I believe it's been well worth the $1200 plus I have invested so far, also bought a third 520h  557 hrs with bagger attachment that needed new front tires for $1000, and my anniversary with 755hrs, had them all out today and running, now to fix that diesel,Jeff.

WOW, looks great Jeff, that is a lot of grass to mow. Great job on the 520.

You sure know your way around the toolbox.

Glenn , thanks you sir , yep it's a lot to now with a 48" deck that's why I got the diesel in hopes of cutting my fuel usage in half, at least I have a paved drive when blowing snow so I'm not tearing up the blower, did the video play?,Jeff.

:doh:I scrolled past it 3 or 4 times.

Quality is a bit low, but the sound is pretty awesome with three onans cranked out at the same time.:handgestures-thumbupright:

If you get it running, let me know. I hadn't thought about selling my 60", but maybe I could be convinced. :)

(it's a New Holland, so it's blue, otherwise, same deck)

I'll keep you all posted ,and keep you in mind about that 60" deck,I did get a new injection pump (from BowExtreme) so after I finish up with fall maintenance/winter prep on the 520s I'm gonna get into the Dxi and see if it's the pump or worse, and if I get it running before snow season I do have the snow blade/plow for it as well as the 520s' 2 stage, single stage, and plow I believe I'm well prepared for whatever winter throws at me,Jeff.
