Stan 4 #1 Posted April 12, 2016 I have a WORKHORSE GT 1642 and I'm thinking of adding a stack. Could someone tell me the easiest method of removing the muffler? I'm also torn between replacing the entire exhaust or removing the small air deflector and simply welding a straight stack to the existing muffler? Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

ol550 830 #4 Posted April 13, 2016 Don't know if this would work for you. Made a stack out of a hand rail. Used the deflector for a pattern and used the same holes.
Stan 4 #5 Posted April 13, 2016 Hey thanks!! That's exactly what I was thinking...looks great! Did you have to weld a plate to the handrail then bolt it to the muffler or what? Thanks again!!
Stan 4 #6 Posted April 13, 2016 Ok, I see now....the bracket is already attached to the rail....wow! I'll have a stack tomorrow!! Thanks for the great advice!! I had originally bought a small stack muffler from Tractor Supply and a rain flap for it ( I love that look ) but I was skeptical of really tinkering with my old Briggs and removing the stock exhaust as it's still in perfect working condition. This idea is better in my opinion as it adds very little weight versus the big stack muffler, but still allows me to get a great looking stack!! Again, thanks so much for the info....guess I'll be at Lowe's first thing in the morning! lol
c-series don 9,479 #7 Posted April 14, 2016 Stan, I have a Work Horse GT 1800 that I was thinking of doing that to. Since they are basically the same engine could you post pics when you are done? Thanks
Stan 4 #8 Posted April 14, 2016 I sure will. I went with a similar idea the ol550 posted. I went to Lowe's and got an 18" bathroom wall handle. I actually went with their brand (Project Source) the tube is much sturdier than the pricier name brand. Its 1 1/2" in diameter so it's perfect for adding a rain flap on top from. Tractor Supply has those for $9.99. I cut one end of the bend off leaving the stack as tall as possible....it's about 16 1/2" tall. I removed the small round air deflector from the stock muffler and did a test fit, marked and drilled the holes (3). I did some prep work, sanding and JB weld in a few spots, then I masked off the engine and sprayed the exhaust and muffler with Rustoleum high heat flat black. I used stainless #14 1/2" sheet metal screws to attatch the stack to the muffler. The handle is stainless steel and it looks very cool against the flat black....I also painted the rain flap flat black. If your factory muffler is in fairly decent shape then I highly recommend this method. The whole thing has a very clean and factory look if I don't say so myself! I'll post pics sometime tomorrow!
Aldon 4,828 #9 Posted April 16, 2016 I will make use of your pics as well. I have a C161 with twin Brigg sans muffler. Fell off late summer last year.
