1277 axle seals

Recommended Posts

ClassicTractorProfessor

Just ordered new axle seals for my 1277...soon as they come in I am going to change them as well as change fluid and filter...is there anything in particular I need to watch for or any special precautions I should take...pretty mechanically inclined but new to working on these tractors

If you have not removed the hubs you might want to start lubricating  and praying their not stuck. Lol

Make sure to check the axle for burs before installing new seals so you don't cut them.

It may help to remove the hub set screws and fill the holes with Kroil or PB Blaster while it is sitting.  Driving with the set screws removed may also help to loosen the hubs. Just keep an eye on them in case you get lucky and the do get loose.

After you get the old seals dug out and the axles filed smooth  lube the new seals and install them with some kind of seal driver ( pvc pipe, socket, or whatever is handy) to drive the seal in straight.

Don't forget to check the key way for burrs also.  A good tip is to put a piece of tape over the end of the axle and key way to aid in not cutting the new seal.  :)
