Ugly horses

Recommended Posts

Perhaps I shouldn't have said ugly... they're just well used as intended and appreciated  in my book.  I'd take in any horse no matter how rough she looks!

Keep the pictures coming!

BOB ELLISON

Here is my b80 I picked up in January this year. I have been working on it as weather permits. Pulled the head and found a beautiful piston and valves. So clean I didn't have to clean them, and yes that says STD on top of piston and wall is greater .i changed oil, plug and points and it runs like a top.i got to change transmission oil which has water in it from a bad shifter boot .already replaced that.i  think I'm going to leave it as is and not paint it.I also replaced drive belt and idler pully.

The picture of my 520h in my avatar might be too small to appreciate how ugly she really is so - -.To give a hint I refer to this one as the big ugly tractor. You guys that have a few know that sometimes you have to name them or number them because I'm taking the Wheel Horse  is not specific enough.JAinVA

This was my first 1057 that I had. This engine had so much grease and dirt on you could not see the jug or block on the stator side. There was no separation one mass of crap. I ran it till it would not run any more  The piston was so loose in there it needed 0.030 over to true it up. Now that was some major over heating. But today it will be like new when I am finished with it. No rush.

My '90 520-8 was very ugly when found, outdoors, sitting for a year. The cover blew off, PO didn't replace it.

After a couple of months, a "like new" Stallion.

ericj,

I have to admit when it comes to abused and neglected your 416 has as much character as my big ugly.It wasn't a red horse but pink, the pto pulleys were completely rusted and the base of the hydraulic cylinder is badly pitted from sitting out in the weather. All they need is a little care and attention they can be show horses again one day.Just not to nice to use I hope.JAinVA

I have to say , growing up on a farm and AG dealership you come to appreciate ugly well used tractors . Those are the ones you go to everyday and depend on . You use them and neglect them and when something happens to it that's the tractor you miss the most . I've seen many of farmers bring in tractors caked with grease , oil ,dirt ,  manure , and who knows what else from top to bottom . Most time before we could diagnose or give a  quote they want to know how soon they could have them back . These well used tractors to me are why we come to love this hobby in the first place .

here's some of my ugly tractors that i've picked up over the years, the 416-8 is the one with the motor tin tore apart, actually got the motor to run on and pulled it off and put it on another tractor, but still have the tractor with an onan 18 on it. the 90 416-H ( 6" front tire tractor ) i bought several years ago pretty much as seen in the pictures. it was rode hard and put away wet, very wet. the running boards are bent down and the hood has a spot were it had a sharp metal ? corner dropped on it and punched through the hood. it was put out for sale with a 2 stage blower, snow plow, bagger and 37" deck and some other non- wheel horse items. the wiring was a mess and it didn't run. they thought it was the start relay but if i remember it was a safety switch. i call it old ugly. it runs real good and probably will pull the 16 hp off of it here before to much longer, not sure if or what motor i may put back on it.

i had the 416-H at the WHCC show several years ago. i tried to start an ugly tractor contest with it but it never gain much traction. I may or may not bring it back this year, depends on how much room is on the trailers and weather or not I've gotten around to pulling the motor off and or replacing it.

it never stops amazing me how people can let a great, and expensive when bought new tractor get to look like some of these machines, heres a pic of the hood from my 312-h,the worst ive seen, even in pics,it looked like it had been in a fire, the hinges are rotted right off,i replced the hood and painted the rest which was just as rusty, didnt take a pic of before

One thing I struggle to get over is how can ANYONE just let some of our beloved machine whither away. Since I began this thread I've seen numerous 520s, Ds, and 400 series outside of here that have been led to an early demise with relatively low hours.  I just don't understand.... do people not care that they're letting a very expensive piece of equipment (when new) just get baked in the sun and/or rust away? What a shame... I like to think I saved my 520 mutt from the crusher and use her every chance I get!

Stupid people do stupid things. If were not for them where would we get all the nice toys to play with.Dragging one back from the brink of the crusher makes my day.JAinva
