Lane Ranger 11,411 #1 Posted April 7, 2016 I am not sure what manufacturer made this motor. I have not seen one like this before -no points cover, 45 degree sparkplug application on the head and sone other unusual features. If you know who made this motor and what HP it might be , please post a note on this thread!
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,239 #2 Posted April 7, 2016 (edited) Lane , Any pics of the front shroud side? My only "guess" from the 45'ed spark plug would be a very old Lauson.. Edited April 7, 2016 by Terry M
prondzy 3,889 #3 Posted April 7, 2016 Do you have another pic of the front of the engine?

Lane Ranger 11,411 #7 Posted April 7, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the Lauson rsc reference ! I did just see this information posted on Ebay also. The 1 1/2 HP motor had the same head with teh 45 degree spark plug hole! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lauson-Model-RSC-4-Cycle-Air-Cooled-Engine-Operators-Manual-Parts-List-/331639644331?hash=item4d374360ab:m:mOlF65IJHjEfV5QvMgkfTjQ Edited April 7, 2016 by Lane Ranger
ztnoo 2,300 #8 Posted April 7, 2016 C-101plowerpower, Wow, how did you come up with that??? I remember maybe seeing a Lauson engine a couple of times when I was a kid (1950's), but they weren't common as I recall, at least around here. Briggs, Kohler, and Tecumseh were the bigger players and you more typically saw those engines on equipment. I have no idea what happen to Lauson, so some research of my own is called for. Great stuff!!! Where is that video from, do you know? Ever see a Lauson engine in Europe??? Lane Ranger, Where did you find this Lane? In an Indiana barn??? Rural Hoosiers squirrel away almost anything if they have the space. Every barn or shed is a potential gold mine. Is it yours, or a buddy's. It's in a vehicle seat, so I'm thinking you latched on to this somewhere.......without really knowing what it was. Is it the same model as C-101plowerpower's video??? Does it turn over? Any other visible identifying stamps, tags, or castings on the engine? What kind of carb does it have? If this is a 1-1 1/2 hp engine, I wonder what they were designed to power??? Couldn't have been anything big, that's for sure. Very interesting!
Lane Ranger 11,411 #10 Posted April 7, 2016 (edited) The note added on the Video on Youtube that c-101plowerpower posted is very interesting also! Here it is: This is a Jari sickle-bar mower engine from 1947. The engine is built to be mounted on a slant, as required by the Jari company who contracted Lauson to build this unique engne for their mower. It has a deep oil sump with the standard Lauson RSC oil pump and dipper trough to provide lubtrication for the unique requrements of this engine. The Jari sickle bar mower blades also at 2 inches wide and fit all the Wheel Horse sickle bar mowers ! Edited April 7, 2016 by Lane Ranger

ztnoo 2,300 #15 Posted April 9, 2016 Lane, Have you been able to determine which model Lauson engine you have??? A RSC 701, RSC 591, or something else? I ran across a video of a RSC 591 I thought might interest you. I also looked at several videos on Jari sickle mowers, but none has what looked like one of these early Lausons on it. Everything looked like it might have been repowered......all the engines looked to be of newer vintage.
