1973 Wheelhorse Automatic 18 PTO controls question

We recently picked up the tractor below. It is a 1-0610.The tractor starts, runs, drives, and sounds great.

 

My son and I are both new to this and this tractor is a little more complex then the other ones we've fixed but we could not pass up the deal we got on it. 

 

Anyway, looking at the operators manual for this tractor it shows a PTO clutch lever on the left side of the dash but ours does not have that. The tractor we have has 3 point hitch and rear PTO.  There is also a switch on the dash for what maybe looks like an "electric PTO"   When I flip the electric pto switch nothing happens but I believe that's because one of the wires is off that goes from the rectifiers to the amps gauge.  The belt(s) are also missing from the front of the tractor.

 

We took the deck off but did not have to take any belts off so I don't understand how the mower deck and rear pto are powered.  There was a broken belt draped over the hood when we picked it and we were told that is why the mower did not work.  I thought it was the deck belt.  Have not taken the deck belt guard off yet to see if that is where it came from though.

 

Is there a diagram or can someone let us know what they think we are missing?    Does the electric PTO power the mower and rear PTO?

Yes the electric PTO at the front of the engine spins both the PTO shaft running through the tractor to the back (Rear PTO) & also a mid mount mower deck.

It's been a long time since I've looked at one & I'm sure someone else will chime in, but the PTO shaft & deck are both operated by belts on the E clutch.

You adjust the belt tension on your mower deck with an adjuster near the attachment where the deck clips in & on the right side of the tractor as your sitting on it.

Keep trouble shooting the electric PTO clutch, sounds like it's not getting power.

Could be a faulty wire or a tripped safety switch.

BMW, It looks like what you have is an 18 Automatic that has been modified or retro-fitted with an electric clutch.  The switch on the lower dash plate is normally for the headlights/taillights. Not sure why there is a resister network of just over 2 Ohms that would require handling up to 60 watts of power.  You may be able to temporarily disconnect the electric clutch circuit and test it with an Ohm meter for continuity.  Worst case senario  maybe you could source some good used parts needed to replace the existing clutch with a mechanical one.  The belt for the mechanical clutch should be part # 103084 this powers the P.T.O. shaft.  If I am not mistaken there should be two belts for mowing: one mower drive belt for power and the blades belt, under the cover.

Yes, there are 2 belts - The PTO is a fairly short one in a "B" series and the mower belt is an "A" series as is the deck belt -- I think the PTO belt is 100" and the mower belt is 105". Unless you have a PTO implement you dont need that belt. Be advised that implements for the PTO need to be exclusively Wheel Horse (I think) as the speed is much higher than others.

 

I have an 18 auto and it also has an electric clutch, but there are some indications it isnt factory - the light switch controls it which seems odd?? But yours appears to have a dedicated switch for the PTO ... These tractors can be a puzzle sometimes

Disconnect the yellow wire nut put 12 volts on the wire going into the PTO.  You should hear a loud click (the electro magnet working) and the pulley should no longer spin freely by hand.
