Got my first wheel horse this week

Recommended Posts

Ohwheelhorse

I picked up a early 60s lawn ranger with a 6 hp Tecumseh that had been in storage for 9 years. The guy told me to flush the tank change points and condenser. I did so pluse new fuel line. The old points looked good but I changed then anyways. It has good compression and spark but seems to be lacking fuel. I can prime the carb with a little gas and get it to fire but will only run for a few seconds until it burns that fuel off. Before I tear into the carburetor I wanted to get some second opinions.

Have you tried cleaning your carb yet?

:wwp:   :WRS:

There's always this option too.  :handgestures-thumbsup:

:WRS:   if it has been setting that long you may be able to clean the carb. in some lacquer thinner and get it going, but you can buy an after market one like Craig suggested for the price of a rebuild kit.  By the way, :wwp:

Check the manuals section here for the carb settings.

I have a 6 hp Tecky and it is very contrary to adjust the carb!

Buy a brand new carb off ebay for less than $20. Just be sure to get the right one so look at the pictures carefully and match to the one you have. There are quite a few different models.

Welcome!! i have a 60's ranger myself (with an engine swap). as the others have already said it may be worth a refresh of the old carb but for the little price of the new aftermarket carb that would be me choice but its up to you. good luck getting her running.

Well local hardware had a rebuild kit.  So I stopped down picked it up. Spent about an hour breaking the carburetor down cleaning it and putting it back together. It wasn't to bad inside. But I still replaced most everything anyway. Cleaned it really good with acetone. Put it back on the motor and same results. I also ordered a eBay carb this morning just in case.

Be sure fuel is flowing from the tank all the way to the carb. It's possible the screen inside the tank or the valve is clogged up from sitting that long. Was the carb bowl filled with gas when you removed it? That bowl may have a little valve on the bottom of the bowl you can push to check it.

Someone had already stuck a screwdriver through the screen. So I went ahead and removed the rest of it. I also had to pack the cap on the valve to stop it from leaking. But yes it's flowing from the tank. And before rebuild I could take the bleeder out and got nothing. But now it flows out of the bowl.

Hmmm, and still only fires with a prime?

I think you'll be all set with the new carb when you get it.

You can try priming it with gas and adjusting the mixture screw on the bottom of the bowl as it's running to try and get it going.

I hope so. It doesn't run long enough to even start trying to adjust it

Well new carb came in today. I couldn't wait to get that thing on. Got it on hooked up the fuel and switched the key and pulled the rope. Fired right up. Slight tuning and she ran great. Then I took it for its maiden mow. Half a lap down the stearing bound up turning to the left. On to the next problem.  I will look at that Friday. Thought I would add a picture of my new toy

Steering can't be too big an issue.

Have fun with your pony.

Ok for those following along. I found the cause of the stearing bind. The deck linkage came lose and jammed in the stearing gear. So now onto another topic in the site. Thank you again for everyone's help. Hope to become more active here.
