BenTheWheelHorseMan 43 #1 Posted April 2, 2016 I have a spare Kohler k241 that I am trying to get in running order. I bought it and it was missing some tins and all of the ignition components. Does anybody have a wiring diagram for a K 241 with a starter generator? And there is a hole behind where the points go. Is there a wire supposed to go there? Any expertise is appreciated. Thanks
pfrederi 18,685 #2 Posted April 2, 2016 If teh hole isn't threaded it is for the plunger that actuates the points. What kind of ignition system do you have, Magneto/points...battery with points or breakerless????
stevasaurus 23,281 #3 Posted April 2, 2016 Here is a link for the Kohler Manual. This is excellent and I think you want Section 8. http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm on the right hand side...type in K in the 1st box...click on 1 to 10 in the 2nd box...horizontal in the 3rd. scroll down to K 241 and click on "service" then click on English to down load. All the wiring diagrams are in Section 8. Are you sure it has a starter/generator? Is this off of a Wheel Horse??

This is from a cub cadet but I plan to either put it on a wheel horse or swap the engine on a cub that I have. 18 minutes ago, pfrederi said: If teh hole isn't threaded it is for the plunger that actuates the points. Does anybody know where I could get one and hot to install it?
stevasaurus 23,281 #5 Posted April 2, 2016 Interesting...let me throw this at you. On Cubs, the starter/generator faces the right side of the tractor. This makes it a (I hope I am correct here) Counter-Clockwise rotation. On Wheel Horses, on the 7 and 8 hsp Kohler engines, the starter/generator faces the left side and is a Clock-Wise rotation. On the 10, 12 and 14 hsp Kohler engines for Wheel Horse...they have what is called a high mount starter...no starter/generator and it engages the fly wheel on the left side. I would be interested to know if that block has the holes for a high mount starter that would engage the flywheel. Also, if you could mount a starter/generator on the right side of a Wheel Horse tractor and what it would take. There may be a couple of sets of tins available, depending on how you try to do this.
pfrederi 18,685 #6 Posted April 2, 2016 It just slides in the point keep it from coming out. International Harvester used 13 different spec #s of K241s ...I looked at several and they all use points plunger # 4741104s

I will be sure to update if I do decide to put it in a horse. To the best of my knowledge it does not have holes in the block to mount the starter. 6 minutes ago, pfrederi said: It just slides in the point keep it from coming out. I was worried that that part may be hard to come by. Glad that it should be easy to get.
pfrederi 18,685 #8 Posted April 2, 2016 Without tins you probably do not know spec #. Maybe some Cub board could help you out if you knew the Cub model # Spec number I found all start with 46 46179, 269,270,280,310 329,407,611,632,657,717,734 and 46754
rmaynard 16,299 #9 Posted April 2, 2016 Older K241's and K301's had starter/generators on them as well. 1045, 1257 for example.
stevasaurus 23,281 #10 Posted April 2, 2016 Ben, you might be surprised to find that they used the same holes for all of the mountings and made the mountings to fit. That is a lot of spec #'s Pual...just shows how much that 10 hsp Kohler became popular. Maynard, you are correct, but they are the opposite field coils of what is on a Cub.

I must say I did not know that all blocks had the same holes. The 10hp Kohler was a staple of the gt industry for many years. Will be ordering the plunger off of eBay soon along with a few other miscellaneous parts and pieces. I hope to get it running within the week.
