520 -h for sale but burns oil. Get it?

 I have a chance to pick up a 520 -h.  But it does burn some oil he says. It comes with a snowblower single stage and a 42 inch mower deck. He wants $400 for it.  What do you think it would take to rebuild that since it's burning oil is it worth the money.

If the deck and blower are in working condition,  they are worth $400.  Might be a candidate for a $600 HF predator repower.

Take it to a shop could be $550-$700.  It depends, if you are up for the job.  This is the place to get the info you need.  There are guys here that can walk you through the whole process and pics.  Good luck on your decision.  What year 520 is it??

 He said it was in a sandy climate here and probably did it in.  It had like 600 hrs on it.

I would buy it. I've used wheel horses that burn oil with no problems besides having to change spark plugs more often. Or you could spend the money to swap the motor or fix it.

If that is the case and you do decide to own it you should take special care in the future to make sure the air cleaner is checked on a reg. basis. Am I right?

I would think it would be more than this because that is the kind of money I paid for my dealer to rebuild the Kohler 18 horse Magnum on my 418-A and everything you read on here says that the Onan parts are a lot more.

I know engines and have done other single cyls.  But never an onan.  Rings and Pistons u think? It is a 1990.

Harbor freight has a engine that's not a you have to be a professor to repower it?

Thats a good deal!! You could sell the snowblower and 48" deck and part out the 520 to double your money if you wanted to.

Yes .  I guess 400 isn't much for what else he has.   I was looking for the wheel weights and parts so I could parts it out.

depends on what u have in mind,i personally would not rebuild an onan,but that's me,they are costly and can be hard to get parts,but that's not too much cash for all that

If you have rebuilt engines successfully, then I wouldn't hesitate to take an Onan apart and determine what parts you need.  At that point, you can make the decision on rebuilding the Onan or repowering with another engine.

The HF predators have been installed in 520s  by several members that have posted the details.

You are doing fine with the posts Scott.     We'll let you know if you make any mistakes.

For $400, you can't really lose, even if you end up parting it out, but I would either rebuild it or put a Predator in it.

I just gave $1200 for my lastest 520 on Good Friday but only 236 hrs on thé clock ...it isn't pretty but the engine sure sounds tight as well as all the brake and shift linkages lol from sitting out under a walnut tree for many years...it came with 48" deck too the original seat(shot) with arm rests(good) and clevis hitch...so $400 as long as the rest is in good shape rebuild or repower just my ,Jeff.

Wife said I wasn't allowed another hot rod muscle car project so I said a few extra horses will only take the same amount of space and keep the yard taken care of when I'm done...and yes I see a  I try to stop just to see if the price is right you never know what may be lurking in the shed just like the N.O.S. 522XI where I just picked those 2 up...but $5900 was just a tad over my budget and wifey's agreement.

Go for it Scott like the guys said gotta be worth that in parts. I would be tempted to go for it just for the repo challenge.

No this one just came on a couple days ago.    He is away right now but comming back sat nite.  He said he would give me first crack at it.  Can't wait!!!
