Working on my new to me Wheel Horse 418-A.I replaced the bushings on the PTO lever.Return spring was non-existant.I have a new return spring.I see one end goes through the eye of a cotter pin on the actuating rod.Where does the other end go???? Can't tell by any of the exploded parts diagrams. Thanks for any and all info.

I think in a hole in the triangle piece.

On a 520 it hooks onto the bottom of the 90 degree bracket for the belt guard.

My 84 GT1600 has a fuse holder clipped on to some sheet metal behind the exhaust. That sheet metal has a through-hole in the bottom facing the steering wheel on the side closest to the foot rest that the spring hooks through.

I I just tried replacing my old spring with a new one, thinking this would help my problem of the PTO popping out of engagement. The wire was a bit thicker so the spring had more force and actually made the problem worse. Went back to the old spring.

Pfrederi, yours and mine look very similar except my hole is on the bottom of that plate. Wonder if it'd be worth drilling a hole in the top and trying that out. My thought is geometry would help keep the lever pulled and engaged.

I haven't had any issues with the lever engaging or staying engaged....

Have you adjusted the clutch? I would do that, according to the manual, before messing with springs. Just a thought!

Gotta mess with the spring because there's none there.MIA

Pete, think that last one was directed at my post referring to the PTO lever disengaging by itself. I've adjusted the trunnion several turns down but it's about 2/3 down the threaded portion toward the PTO lever  right now. I'll start another thread if my problems continue rather than clutter yours.

My 416-H is also missing the spring, it explains why the lever moves forward when disengaged.

Warning:Unsupervised

Looking at 414-8 parts breakdown closer I noticed my PTO spring was in fact gone but I couldnt tell where it  connected by Toro/break down  images? Thanks for showing us what Toro can't seem to do for decades now.

Big Thanks!

I never found my original spring to see if it broke or fell off?

I ordered a new one off fleabay since no local Toro dealers around me anymore.

I originally had a no start issue and first determined a metal tab had broken clean off one of my (2) PTO safety switches. Then after I assembled it with (2) new switches  (not knowing about spring yet) I had to move my PTO handle back/forth to find the sweet spot to start my tractor.

Since I never had to move my PTO lever at all before, then I knew something else occurred on it too.

Im guessing my spring wasn't gone too long without having to fiddle with lever.

Have a great day folks...

Thank you all once again, great job & great pics too.
