KT17S V-twin kohler coil problem

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have just tried to start the tractor after sitting for the winter in the garage.  I am getting spark out of one side of the coil and not the other?  Is that possible?  I swapped plugs.  Nothing.  I swapped plug wires.  Nothing.  I only get spark out of one of the coil outputs.  Is there anyway to troubleshoot this?  i do not want to spend 150 bucks and it not be the problem.

Thanks

Sid

Take an ohm meter reading from the small + terminal to each of the spark plug wire holes.  I do not know the normal resistance but what ever it reads should be about the same to each side.  I would bet one shows an open, the side not making spark. If the readings are about the same then you have a wire /plug issue.  I think there is some coil used by Harley-Davidsons that some have used on twin Kohlers and is much cheaper.

This seems odd in that the coil is designed to fire both wires at the same time, just that one cylinder is on exhaust stroke - this is true on many 2 cyl engines. But do as Sid suggests and check it, maybe something will show up.

Probably gonna need another coil whatever though... And yeah many of the older Harley coils work quite well on these twins - I have 2 tractors with used ones on them from a flea market for $5!!

Theres usually many on ebay.....

Thank you guys.  I will check here in about 1 hour when I get to the house.  Any idea of what type of old Harley coil or part number that would work by any chance?

Thanks

Sid

Evening all,

I checked like the service manual says with the voltmeter between the primary leads.  I get 4.7 Ohms.  Thats a pass.  I checked between the secondary outputs, I get 10.8 KOhms.  Thats a pass.  I cleaned the points.  I cleaned the contacts on the output of the coil spark plug leads.  Still only spark out of the same post.  Don't know what else to do at this point.

I have a gentleman that has a similiar coil for an older Onan I am going to borrow tomorrow.  We'll give that a try.

Stay tuned.

Sid
