D-160 Electric Clutch

Recommended Posts

tractorhogg

I repowered an Onan D-160 with a Kohler single ( that's what I like, sorry, no twins for me) and I had a Allis 416H engine with bad valve guides that had an electric clutch, since the dash on the Onan tractor included an switch for the electric PTO I decided to see if I was going to get lucky and have the pulley match up, yep they did. This clutch is nearly the same as many electric clutches in the 1973-1975 range, no second pulley, but this D-160 will never have a mower anyway, notice front and rear tires. BTW, you can see in the first picture the Allis 416H that the clutch came off of. The shaft and key are straight and clean.

THAT is the old Allis engine? I thought you had turned the shaft or something. Looks brand new

The guy I got this tractor from mowed 5 acres with this machine, this was his second engine since new, the clutch was not new. In 20 plus years of mowing I don't see the type of wear some are experiencing on Wheel Horse electric clutches. Some of that wear may be due to improper adjustment as I don't think it's all design.

I haven't had mine off, it just bothers me how the tractor shudders and jerks when you engage it. I started throttling down before engaging and it seems to help.

There has to be a reson that generally this problem seems to be on Wheel Horse tractors, or tractors with engines mounted sideways. it is interesting to note that most sideways mounted engines DO NOT have electric clutches, like the old Fords, Jacobsons, the Sears, and the John Deere 100 and 200 series. While a few of these tractors, like Wheel Horse, had optional electric clutches it seems it was not as prevalent as engines mounted North to South. it has to be in the adjust ment, the engine direction, or the design or model of the clutch. This violent shuddering is not a good sign, but I don't have to tell you guys. I guess I will see how mine works soon. I would really like someone that is running a D series Onan twin to tell us about their electric clutches and how they work an feel.

Mine is on my 522xi, so it isn't the engine orientation

It appears that the wheel horse electric PTO acts as a digital on off engagement. Regardless of horizontal or vertical placement, full and immediate engagement from none is going to result as has been articulated.

I am not familiar with other brands PTO's but is there actual friction clutch plate engagement as opposed to what appears to be a gear or Mecahnical engagement?

It might not be, but I wonder if the 522xi uses the same clutches as the sideways mounted engines, I bet not, but yours might be a Ogura clutch and the older ones maybe Wagner.

Most electric clutches use 12 volt electric to engage the clutch by a magnetic charge created by electricity, there are springs on  most some clutches to adjust the gap, to far and the magnets wont engage, too close and they slam together.

Couple of thoughts.  I have been disassembling 3 electric PTOS.  First there is no friction material.  Simply two steel plates yanked together by the electro magnet.  Do not use it for a while and guess what, steel rusts Two rusty  rough surfaces do not engage smoothly.  The case mentioned above of the frequently used tractor working smoothly probably meant the use kept the steel plates clean and smooth.

Next on design.  WH didn't make these PTOs You can figure that by the use of a NLA bearing  The larger inner one.   6207-40NSL  Searching for a source revealed complaints at other discussion boards about Allis and simplicity that they used the same odd bearing.  Also looking at pictures the design is the same.
