MaineDad 87 #1 Posted December 10, 2008 I tried to replace the oil seal on my 314-8 and failed miserably. The old seal was near impossible to remove. I had to use a small sewing needle to get as much as I could out of the outside groove. It's still not all out! Any ideas? I tried to install a new seal and it would not go all of the way in. The new seal is damaged now too I am not sure of the best way to get the old seal out...
Confused99 2 #2 Posted December 10, 2008 I have used a small screw to remove old seals. Screw it into the old seal and pull it out with a pair of plyers. To get the new one on, a piece of pipe longer then the axle may work or you could buy a seal driver.
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted December 10, 2008 I've usually been successful digging the old seal out with a long, thin screwdriver. You can also get a blunt awl shaped tool with a bit of a hook in the end to dig the thing out. You have to get the point of our tool behind the steel outer part of the seal, instead of trying to lever on the soft rubber part. It will be harder to do now the old seal is buried deeper down the hole.... If you do decide to just push the seal further in, and add the new seal on the outside, its a good idea to put a bit of grease in the back of the seal. Most seals rely on a bit of lubrication to prevent the lip burning up on the moving shaft.
CasualObserver 3,411 #4 Posted December 10, 2008 I use an O-ring pick to get them out, and a small piece of pvc pipe for a driver. Sometimes on a stubborn one, I've had to hammer the tip of the pick into the old seal to get it out.
jtmoyer 1 #5 Posted December 10, 2008 i used a screw in the metal of the old seal. and then used the jack handle and a hammer to drive the new seal in

CasualObserver 3,411 #9 Posted January 16, 2009 That is correct. Pull the old seals from the outside, and set the new ones.
