clutch trunion

Why does the 8 speed clutch trunnion have 2 holes for the clutch rod? An upper and lower. 416-8

The trunnion is the fitting threaded on the rod. Do you mean the lever it goes into?

Yes the lever it goes into that moves the clutch pulley.

Without knowing your model number and year will guess that that part was also used on the early models that had only the left pedal for both the clutch and the brake. The first of the pedal travel from rest released the tension on the drive belt and as the pedal approached the last of it's travel a rod in the 2nd hole applied the brake band.

I think 1973 was the last year for the single pedal.

I pondered this question when I was restoring my C141.  Eventually I reasoned this was to provide for clutch adjustment so the clutch would disengage when the pedal was first engaged rather than at the end of the stroke.  Otherwise, if you had short legs, you had to pull the seat all the way up to press the clutch pedal to disengage, then getting off the tractor became more difficult.  I moved mine.

 

Also, on your 1995 machine, Toro may have used a gas strut to modulate the clutch engagement (I cannot remember when they were first started to be used).  Eventually this strut will fail and they are quite expensive.  I just added the old style spring and left the gas strut in place (until I have to replace the belt).  Spring is $10-15, strut is $60 (although I recall a member here telling where to get them for reasonable $)
