SylvanLakeWH 28,453 #1 Posted March 13, 2016 Have an 82' C 105. Replacing all 4 tires due to dry rot. In the process, after removing the tires, I'm wondering how much movement there should be in the front steering spindles? Not a lot of jiggle, but I've never dealt with them before so I just want to make sure I fix something if I need to while I've got it apart. Relative newbie, so any advice appreciated. doc724 925 #2 Posted March 13, 2016 There are four sources of movement in the front spindles 1. Wheel bearings are shot 2. Spindles are worn because bearings are shot 3. Bearings (light press fit into the wheels) move 4. Tie rod are shot With a machine this old, any and all are suspect. Tie rods run $20-29 each. Buy aftermarket ones (Stens), they work just fine. Wheel bearings run anywhere from $5 to $15 each. Cheaper ones are made from drawn steel cups. More expensive ones are machined from billet. Get double sealed bearings and then get rid of the grease fitting in each wheel. If spindles are worn they are big $, although maybe you can find a gently used one. A front wheel used will run $10-20. When I restored my C141, I bought new tie rods, new wheel bearings ($13x4), one used wheel...but then again I am a fanatic about doing something right. Or you could just leave it alone and live with it. It's your tractor and as long as you are happy, that is all that matters.

SylvanLakeWH 28,453 #5 Posted March 14, 2016 Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I cleaned and greased everything up nice and she seems tight enough and happy! I will keep an eye on them and use these suggestions if the need arises. THANKS!
Don1977 605 #6 Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) I don't know what movement your having with your spindles. Some other things to check is movement of the axle at the pivot the tab welded to the pin is broken on a lot of Wheel Horses. The other thing is the fan gear may need to be tighten. The carter pin can wear causing excess play in the steering. Usually a new carter pin will fix it or maybe another shim washer.
