The Ignored and Unappreciated Deck

Recommended Posts

Not here on the forum, lots of pictures and concern with upkeep, but at tractor shows mower decks seem to be a rare implement. Looking through hundreds of photographs of  tractors at tractor shows I noticed very, very few tractors pictured with the deck installed. Are people embarrassed by the mower deck? Do people want others to see their machines as tractors and not lawn lowers? Is it psychological, or or aesthetic? I don't know and answers we give may not always reveal true reasons. I'm just glad a mower deck doesn't have feelings, otherwise we would need to make a facebook page or a gofundme page to show appreciation. My wife loves the deck, it keeps the brush down and the lawn mowed.

retired my 857 from mowing last august I restored it back in 2003 and mowed with it ever since and dam a lot of work washing that every time I mowed had 36 rear discharge deck and it just enilelated the paint. had too much money in it to mow and tear it up now just using it as tractor to pull yard roller and leaf sweeper and yard sprayer.

I am sure there are multiple reasons.

The tractor is the heart and soul. The deck is an also run add on. Like a tiller, plow or blower etc....

Basically the tractor is the cool factor part of the hobby.

I think the decks take more abuse too. Are heavy and bulky to lug around to shows.

And a lot of the time people have a zero turn or something for mowing and focus on the fun side of it.

I never feel nostalgic when I walk by a deck. However for some reason I almost always do when seeing an old tractor.

Since my :wh: are workers, the deck is considered part of the tractor, keep them cleaned underneath all season , greased etc. Good cleaning top and bottom end of season. Greased , blades sharpened or replaced and belts checked out , rust area where paint chipped cleaned up and sprayed with paint.

That's a good observation, tractorhogg

I have noticed the absence of decks in a lot pics also.   And the deck is probably the most common attachment.

I have always thought that Wheel Horses were very good looking tractors and for my personal taste I always liked the looks of them without the deck attached.  And that's probably because I'm used to seeing mine with deck/s on most of the time.
