Stop my belt Lawn Ranger re-power project

Recommended Posts

jb4249

I am replacing the engine on my 1967 Lawn Ranger with a HF 212 cc engine. Project is coming along pretty good, just finishing the hood and a few final touches. One problem I am having is getting it into gear when it is running. I had to cut off the front of the belt guard to accommodate the new engine. I think the belt is still turning the tranny when the clutch is depressed. I think I read some where that the little lip on the bottom of the belt guard stops the belt when the clutch is depressed. If that is the case, I'll need to weld it back on the modified belt guard. How hard should it press against the belt?

Any help?

Ted

This is the best picture of my L107 belt that i have at the moment.  The top of the guard is 3/16" above teh belt.  the tab o the bottom which has ridge near the end of it is 1/8" away from the belt. Your guard, or tabs added to it will have to get closer to teh pulley.  You might be able to fab a couple of bent wire guards  as used on some other horses that are mounted to the engine block sort of like my hand made snow blower mount to the front in the picture.

Another thing that helps out is to add a belt brake to the idler/clutch pulley, If it doesn't already have one. I had room to make one with a round peg on my suburban, but a piece of metal with a 90 degree bend on it would require less space & do the same thing. Mine is held on with the same bolt that holds the pulley on. I also made some belt brakes that bolt right on to the engine. I Realize you have a different model, but hope this gives you some ideas for yours.

all I did on my 68 lawn ranger with the same motor is stretch the belt a bit. Once I depress the brake, it stops the belt from turning regardless of if I'm using a 3 inch pulley for just putting around, or a 2 inch dual pulley for mowing. Just pull on the belt for a few minutes to stretch it. I don't even have the belt guard on since I don't want to destroy it to fit the new engine.

I just went to check and see if the belt guard actually fit because I hadn't tried yet, and other than the top side rubbing the guard a tiny bit, it fits perfect. Now all that's left is modifying the hood. I would think about welding the other piece to the guard back on and then placing it to see what actually needs to be modified.
