Air cleaner question 653-753

Recommended Posts

Live4outdoors

I just acquired new to me lawn ranger for the kids hiding in the back shed until the daughters birthday, I have Tecumseh motors for on it but needed the air cleaner assembly since the snow blower engine is different.  If I'm not crazy, I just realized my 653 with original H60 motor has the same air cleaner as the 753 K161, I can bolt them right up to each other.  Contacted a used lawn and garden guy and he laughed and said NO, you can't put a kohler air cleaner on a Tecumseh....so I tore both cleaners off and they look identical to me.  Does someone have any insight on this?  Did someone already swap one or the other out on my two existing tractors, or are they the same?  Thanks for any help..

The two small bolts that hold the base to the carb are the same distance apart and the center hole is 1 inch on a K181 I have on the bench and the H60 on my Lawn Ranger.  Can't hurt to try.

Yeah, it will bolt right up, I was just curious if this is right or if one of my tractors is wrong....odd by the way the tractor parts guy responded, if it wasn't for that I would've thought they were the same from the wheelhorse factory.  The Tecumseh air cleaners I have won't lay flat enough to fit behind the round hood.

I've seen Walbro carburetors on both Kohler and Tecumseh engines, so the air cleaners should be interchangeable.   The air cleaners in your pictures look like they are both from a Kohler.   The typical Tecumseh air cleaner looks different, and is smaller diameter.   But if the screw holes match up, and the intake diameter is the same, they will all clean air.   Some Tecumseh cleaner housings have a small notch at one side of the intake;  it fits around some sort of jet just inside the carb..   At most, you might have to cut that notch into the Kohler housing at the intake.

Good luck with the Tec rebuild.  That red Tec seemed to be in great condition, and if you paint the shroud red from the other engine, I think you'll have a good unit.

I hope your daughter likes it.

Is it just a illusion or does the one on the right top pic look like the ring for air filter is ever so slightly of set to the right,, maybe a tropical delusion lmao...

I think it is the way the photo was taken.

If it fits, doesn't matter what it is Tecky or Kohler!

Well spent the day at my buddies shop with the carb since the rebuilds I got off eBay aren't even close and found the carb to be one of the very few Walbro carbs put on the early 60s tecumsehs all that means is instead of a $12 rebuild kit, it's S/O $30 kit.  It's on its way but that is how that air cleaner fits.  But I also dug out an old H60 Lauson carb and the air cleaner will bolt right to it!  So now I just need to get my hands on the kohler air cleaner and call it done!

so kc9kas, it doesn't matter and phatboy, it's an illusion, they are identical!

sometimes I feel I get too picky trying to get things perfect and how they were from factory, I was promised the 653 was never tampered with and all factory when I got it, so maybe the factory ran out and slapped the kohler cleaner on it and it worked...but it definitely made the hunt for a cleaner easier for the ranger project.
