Michael Bullington 5 #1 Posted December 8, 2008 I have a few question on some of the tractors produced during the 80's These models are: 1100 Special GT-2500 SB421 SK486 SB371 Anyone know why these tractors have odd models numbers ,,,is there something special about these specific ones? It seems they would be the same as the C series to me? :hide:
Sparky-(Admin) 23,150 #2 Posted December 8, 2008 The 1100 special, the SB421, the SB371 and the GT-2500 were Briggs powered tractors I think. Maybe Jerry(oldnred) will chime in. He has a couple of the "S" tractors. Mike........
Rollerman 290 #3 Posted December 8, 2008 I had an SK486 a few years back....should have kept it..... I can tell you it had a K341 Kohler engine & a light duty 8 speed with the 4 pinion rear & 1" axles & equipted with a 48" deck. I'm told they were sold at hardware stores & the like? Michael Bullington 5 #4 Posted December 8, 2008 Great information!! yes i have found all but sk486 was briggs powered.. hey tickster,,Was the SK486 any different than the C165 model... also was the SB371 the same tractor as the B112 ,, any differences? and the hardware story would make sence to me about the model number changed
Rollerman 290 #5 Posted December 8, 2008 Stone the SK486 looked just like a C161.....but the engine was mounted on a fixed plate...not the rubber mounted plate. Never liked the way mine ran....the main reason I sold it....but it looked very good.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted December 8, 2008 The 1981 GT-2500 was the Anniversary Special - commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Wheel Horse name. (included a 1 Troy ounce bar of .999 pure silver when bought new) The breakdown of the "S" tractors is "S" for "special" "K" or "B" for Kohler or Briggs & Stratton, the first two digits of the number is the deck size (included with the these models), and the last digit denotes the horsepower: "1" is for 11hp and "6" is 16hp. The SB-371 is basically a B-111 / B-112. The 1982 SB-421 & 1980 1100 Special are almost identical tractors. They also resemble the '78/'79 C series. (old style hood) I think the 1100 Special was built as a lower priced model to compete with the "cheapie" units of that era. (similar to the B-60 / 80 / 100 models of the 70's) The 1982 SK486 was more like a C161 8 speed (single cylinder) but without the isolation cradle mounted engine. (Tickster covered that. ) http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=914 Some people think these models were built to use up the leftover parts from the '78/'79 models, but that would mean that there was a heck of a pile of leftovers! The pewter gray WorkHorse line also came out in 1982 and essentially took the place of the "S" models at the hardware and some department stores. Some dealers were complaining that WH tractors were being sold outside of the "network" (taking money from them), but I'm not sure if that's why the WorkHorse line was dropped after 1984. I do think they were pulled from the non-dealer sales locations for the 1984 sales year. (Disclaimer: some of the information provided above might not be accurate.)
