Which is bigger? 314 or 265?

Surprised me!  Going through the brochure that came along with my 522XI I noticed this:

Turning Radius    32"  vs  16"  (thought this was interesting as well)

And the 265 will take all the comparable attachments listed for the 314, except for a mid-mount blade, including a 2 stage blower and a tiller!

 

Changes my thoughts about the 200 series!

Aren't the 200 series vertical shaft tractors? Im not familiar with the 200 series, but i think they are a completely different animal than the 300 series. Don't think that many attachments would interchange.

Yes, they are vertical shaft machines.  I think all of the newer machines, including the xi series and big box store mowers have sharper turning radius.  Although some folks like the 200 series machines, they do not seem to hold as much appeal to collectors or hold their value as well-just an observation, not a statistical analysis.

Yes 200's are vertical and attachments are different. I had a 210-H for 20 yrs. Very dependable!

It seems that there is some interchangeability. The 265-6 morphed into the 417XT

"We" here seem to have little interest in the 200 series but the more I read the more I would consider the later models if I could find a bargain.  Odd thing is around here the folks selling them don't seem to be very motivated.  Quite pricey and for reasons I've yet to fully understand.  I can see someone wanting one but why would anyone pay more for one?  Really, i, this area the asking prices are right up there, even with the vertical shaft, weaker axles and scarcity of attachments...  Of course the bigger ones are also newer compared to many of my herd...

Their is two 268 hydros for sale on my local CL one is 500 missing hood but is supposed to work great with 48" deck and the other is 300$ needs a starter and comes with a 48" deck the look like decent mowers and supposed to weigh around 700 pounds but they just don't seem to fit a need in my herd but wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those 48" decks and converting them to work on one of my older horses

It may seem like splitting hairs, but a 265 isn't really a 200-series. It's a 260 series.  Meant to serve duty as a "yard" tractor or lightweight garden tractor.   They can do almost everything a 300+ series could except take ground engaging attachments (plow, disc, etc) and a loader.   A tiller was available.  

 

They're actually quite durable and heavy.   Based on the earlier 240 series.  They do have softer transaxles than th classic wh gt, but that's kind of qualitative since the cast iron unidrive tends to be as reliable and tough as a stone fence.  

 

True 200 series tractors (211, 212, 208, etc) are lawn tractors.   Basically on par with big box lawn tractors (but better).  Replace that second digit with  4, 5, 6, or 7 and you've stepped up a class. 

 

As mowing machines go, they're better than a classic in my book.   You can turn one around inside the circle made by a 314.

The snowblower for the 260 uses the same basic housing as the 4200 series.Same auger(different part number) and the same tall chute.I am in the process of converting

a pristine 260 blower I scored for $80.00 to work on one of my 400 series tractors.I will post pictures of the conversion when I finish it.JAinVA

Both sound like bargains, especially compared to what I've seen around here.  I could use another spare rider with a 48" deck.

Hey Dennis, if you want to take a field trip to Barrington RI, there is currently a 265 on RI CL with a plow and dozer blade-$425.  Barrington is a well to do RI community with small lots.  I would no think it got much exercise

Sounds like a good deal, but I was just sharing some specs.  Still not looking for any 200 series but up 'till recently I didn't think any of the 200 series had much to offer.  I'm thinking maybe some do!

Just reviewing a bit and rereading this older thread.  I did find a bargain and I am now a proud owner of a 264 with a snow blower and deck.  I really think they are underrated and quite worthy of a second look!  Thanks for all the favorable comments or I would have passed on this fine WH!
