Delco Remy starter generator problem

I just bought a Cub Cadet 104 with a starter generator and a free a few minutes of running the starter generator gets too hot to touch and it smokes out of a small hole near the back of the housing. I know this is the wheelhouse forum, but this is the only place I know. Also the engine runs super high rpms so that may not help the starter generator any. All feedback is appreciated.

I would first suspect the voltage regulator.  Field coil contact in the regulator may be stuck making the generator output the  maximum it can.  What is voltage when running?  Is there an amp meter can you wire one in ???

I would go with the regulator as the culprit as well. But if the Genny is getting hot and the Genie escaped out the small hole in the back, better plan on getting it overhauled.

I kind of wondered about if it would need an overhaul. I will look into replacing the voltage regulator as well. Is it possible that the high rpms of the engine could cause it? I think I need to set the governor to slow it down.

RPMs very very doubtful.  If teh regulator was working it would control the field (increase the resistance to ground of the field coil) so as to reduce the generators output

Is it possible that the heat and smoke could have been cause by worn bearings? I have a friend that said he has one and replaced the bearings and it was fine. Still planning on a full rebuild but I wondered if that could be the problem.

Possible.  Does it have oil points (spring loaded covers on the ends.  put in some oil... not much just a few drops and see if it runs quieter.

 

Again what is the voltage when it is running and can you check for amperage otherwise we are guessing

It does not have oil points. My starter generator is 12 volt. I will have to check amps later. I have not done that to this point.

In addition to amperage check the voltage when running should be 13.6 to 14.5 or similar.

One thing to maybe be aware of with the Cub Cadet starter/generators...the Cubs use a "clockwise rotation" starter/generator.  Might have CW stamped on the back end.  Wheel Horses use the "counter-clockwise rotation" starter/generator...CCW.  This may make a difference if you have to order parts.  :eusa-think:

 

Sorry guys...I got it backwards.  Cubs use the Counter-clock wise rotation.  Wheel Horse uses the Clockwise rotation.

Is this viewed from the pulley end as kohler recommends ? ? ?

That is kind of what I was thinking as I was reading this, wonder if it is the proper S/G or if it may have been replaced with a CCW unit which is the most common type?

Simply amazing but all my wheel horses that have a SG turn CW

ijust bought a new one a couple months ago for an 857 and it turns CW

specialwheelhorse...you are correct...I got it backwards.  Cubs use the CCW rotation and Wheel Horse uses the CW rotation.  I apologize for not checking first.  :eusa-think:

:text-imsorry:   Steve is usually right on and I followed his lead, :hide:  @specialwheelhorse caught us all napping; Senior Moments are great. But, I remain curious as to this not being the correct rotation S/G on the Cub.

Richard, I was involved in a thread a few years ago, and I had to find it today  :)  , but you can change the rotation on a starter/generator by changing out the field coils.  Let me post a link to that thread...if someone changed out the field coils, you may be OK.  Might need SOI to come in and help to determine if that is what you got.

No problemo ive got to the place where i have to hang sticky notes all over to jog my mind

About stuff like this. Its no picnic getting up in years. And i are there ! ! ! !
