C160 Fuel Pump

Recommended Posts

This is a picture of the fuel pump on my C160. A couple questions.

I have read that there is a pulse type pump, would this be it?

Also, If you have a K series with pulse pump, I would imagine it still has the lobe on the cam for the lever type fuel pump?

I am pretty positive it is leaking. I usually don't shut my fuel off and found a puddle under the C160. This seemed to be the source of the leak. Is there any rebuild kits anyone has tried for this type pump? I haven't found any yet. There was an auto site that sold rebuilds for kohler K series pumps but I cant find it anymore.

Last, if I have to replace the pump, what does everyone think of the new plastic type pumps and does anyone have a source for best price/ quality.

Thanks in advance! I hope to go out and start working on it tomorrow again. It has been a slow project from hubs loose on axle, pulleys, carb rebuild/points and other little things. It still needs a new wiring harness cause right now it starts with a toggle switch and push button but its getting there. Wasn't expecting this gas leak.. oh well.

That is not a pulse pump. That is one of many different configurations of mechanical pumps that Kohler used. It can be replaced with any of the plastic pumps listed for the K-341. EBay is a good source, as well as Amazon.com. Your local NAPA should have them as well.

Yes to what maynard sez, but I have to agree with squonk about an electric - one of the first things I usually do is get an electric pump. With our old tractors usually sitting for long periods of time and along with their advanced age (like me!) the fuel system is almost always in a mess.

Or you can make a gasket. Appears that top cover was leaking before and someone just used gasket sealer which will not hold up to gasoline over time. There are a few products out there like Yamabond that will but doubt that's what was used on there. Since you have to remove it to replace it, 1/2 the work is done anyway. Gasket material is cheap and can be found at any auto parts store plus that looks like a real easy one to make.

I saw the red sealant, most likely rtv or something along those lines myself. I never had good luck with sealing stuff involving gasoline. However, Yamabond is some good stuff. Only thing I would use on the four wheelers. I am having similar issues as Squonk. There are no leaks today and the gas has been turned on a while. Never fails I guess. I am leaning towards complete replacement. But I am not apposed to finding some gasket materials online to try and make my own new ones to use as a back up. Might have to search some fuel safe gasket material of high quality. A buddy of mine just bought a set of gasket punches also to make nice holes and such. Thanks again Red Square.

Also, another question. The pump I need is the 47 559 11S by Kohler. My local toro guy wants $140.00 for a Kohler brand, I assume. Is there going to be a big difference between the amazon aftermarket $35.99 pump to the Kohler brand $140.00 Pump? Have people had good luck with them? I am willing to try it out with such a huge price difference.

I would also install an electric pump. I bypassed my mechanical fuel pump once it started giving me problems. This is the one I used on my Raider 12 (Airtex E8016S):

Best part is now I don't have to worry about shutting off my gas tank when not in use. It doesn't leak at all. I just wait a few seconds to get the fuel flowing to the carb and then turn it over. Starts every time. Just make sure you fuse it when you hook it up.

I have seen no difference between the plastic Kohler replacement pumps and the ones offered on Amazon, other than price.

Agree with electric fuel pump. Did my C-175 for under $30 with fuse and relay included. Starts right up now and it's been over a year since I put it on so the pump I got for $12 off eBay is doing the trick :-)

If you read my threads, you will see I used a Napa 6101051 pump. it draws 5 amps. Wired in a relay that's  dime a dozen at any auto scrap yard. ( I have a drawer full! :) ) so the ign switch doesn't handle the load. Real simple to do and better starting when the tractor sits. :banana-wrench:
