Xjchief 128 #1 Posted February 3, 2016 So I have a commando 8 that I feel like all I do is work on this tractor. Long story short just did piston rings due to oil spaying out of the breather. did everything properly. Started it up and it runs perfectly. Ran it through the a break in period with break in oil, drained filled with Mobil 1 10w30.perfect then noticed oil/gas mix spraying out of the crankcase breather, I replaced that gasket and took the reed apart and yes they are in the correct orientation . So the last thing I'm thinking is the valves/valve seats are bad, seems like the only thing left am I right?probably should have checked that while apart but I knew the rings were bad because it was smoking badly. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance
WHX?? 51,856 #2 Posted February 3, 2016 I would like to say valve guides Chief but that doesn't explain the gas/oil mix? Not a stuck float bowl inlet letting gas into the crankcase?
squonk 43,911 #3 Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) How bad was the cylinder wall? Did you check it for taper? If it was really smoking and the rings were shot it probably needed boring. Fuel could be blowing by those new rings. Edited February 3, 2016 by squonk
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,510 #4 Posted February 3, 2016 Have you seen this service bulletin? Garry
prondzy 3,889 #5 Posted February 3, 2016 First, did you measure for out of round on the cylinder? Putting new rings in a bad bore will cause this issue. If it were valve guides it would puff a little smoke at start up that's all, which doesn't sound like your issue. When you put the breather together did you put the hole on the back plate towards the bottom? If it is toward the top you will have this issue when the breather fills up with oil. Another thing to conside is if you read the Kohler Engine manual ( you can download it if you don't have one) it states " the use of multi weight oil (10w30) will result in oil consumption/loss" this is because it's thinner when it's colder, and synthetic will increase this because of its viscosity at cold temps. It is recommended to run SAE 30, unless you are running in a colder environment then use 10w30, but the above can occur. Hope this helps get you in the right direction. WH nut 553 #6 Posted February 4, 2016 I agree, its a breather issue, Hole needs to be on bottom.
