First Wheel Horse....Drive Belt Guard Needed. 854??

Recommended Posts

DeHart16

So if all goes well I should be picking up my first wheel horse in a few days. I Will post some pictures once I get it home and ensure the model ect.

In the meantime, it looks as though I will be needing a drive belt guard. The tractor has hydro and that has the guard, but no standard drive belt guard. I understand I need this for the tractor to operate properly. How hard are they to come by? Can someone give me info on other models that may match up? Tractor is a 1964 854.

Thanks

Doug

Once you confirm the model...

shouldn't be too hard to track one down.

Might try a "wanted" ad in our  :rs:classified forum...

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/wanted/

or...try one of our very own :wh: parts vendors found here in the vendor section.

Welcome to RS and congrats.  A 854 is a sweet ride and very collectible.

The HY is a nice option too.

The primary belt guard is interchangeable with multiple models from 1961-1964.

I believe you need to find one from a Kohler model as the Kohler and Tech engines had different mounting flanges on the belt guard.

854, 704, 633, 753, 702, 701 should all interchange to the best of my understanding.

If you're willing to modify and weld on a new engine mounting tab, the techy models should also work.

604, 654, 653, 603, 502, 552

In addition to what AMC noted, I'd also watch Craig's List for parts.  That's where I found a belt guard for my 702.

I've found parts that I needed just by asking the sellers of other wheel horse parts if they have other parts for sale besides what they have listed.

Want ads work too.

4993 Transmission drive belt guard has model number indentation - models 704, 706, 754, 854, 855, 856, early production 857

4993 Transmission drive belt guard does not have model number indentation - late production 857, 867,  1968 Commando 8 model 1-4831

The parts lists for the 633 and 753 list a 4450 belt guard. I don't know if that is correct or a typo.

Good info.  On most of these models, the stamped guard is basically the same either having the indentation for the decal or not.  The primary difference between the guards is the front mounting tab to the engine.

A lot of interchangeability.

My 66 Lawn Ranger has the same stamped guard as my 62 702 other than the different engine tab for the smaller tech engine.  My 867 is interchangeable with my 702 other than the decal indention.

Other than the engine tab, they fit the same.

Man, thanks for the info guys. All great stuff. So many models and guard covers! Without seeing the tractor I still can't believe I need this part to effectively shift gears..?

I found an early 1960's Ranger cover on eBay..would that work?

I'm sure the front engine tab would be wrong, but the actual guard might work if you replace the tab.

Here is what you need and what the early lawn ranger is.  The engine tab is the difference.   The tab can easily be replaced if you weld or can have someone else weld a different one on.

I'd find a shield with the indent for the model decal as the 854 originally had this and it matches the indents for the hood decals.  A nice touch IMO.

Picked up my tractor yesterday...this is what I am working with. Engine is strong with tons of compression. I need a battery so looking for suggestions on that...total sand and repaint of all metal is that plan.
