Recommended Posts

Guys,

What is difference between the 300 series and 400 series? I only see that the wheels and tires are different.

Second question- did wh ever make a 412-8 ?? If so, please post any pictures you may have. I am restoring my 312-8 and upgraded the front and rear tires and wheels to the resemble the 400 series. thanks-steve bo :hide:

No, the entry level 400 series was a 414-8. 14 horsepower was the smallest engine on a 400.

As with the rest of Wheel Horse tractors, there were exceptions to the rule, but here's the basics:

Tranny -Early 400 series were 1 and 1/8th axles and 8 pinion diffs on the 8 speed models, 300 were 1 inch axles with 4 pinion diffs. Hydros were the same in the transaxle department, and the only difference was when the tractor came with hydraulic lift- It would be equipped with an Eaton 1100 series pump, as opposed to the 700 series for manual lift.

Later 300 series tractors used the 1 and 1/8th axles also (i.e. 315-8).

Engines - Early 300 series tractors came with Kohler K series engines ranging from 10-14 horsepower. In 1987, the K- series engines were replaced with the Magnum series, including the M8 on the 308-8. The last 300 series, which were produced until 2007 used Kohler Command 14 and 15 hp engines.

Early 400 series tractors came with Kohler engines ranging from 14-17 horsepower. Later models had a variety of engines, including Onan twins on the 416 models.

Options - The obvious stuff. Generally, 400 series sometimes came with bigger tires, better seats, maybe an extra bell or whistle. Later when the 400 series were discontinued, these options migrated to the 300 series.

I don't know if it will add anything to Kevin's post, but we had a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. You might read it to gather more info. Here's the link: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=6628
