tsmall07 49 #1 Posted January 22, 2016 (edited) I started a new thread because the issue is different now. I went to start it this morning and it ran poorly for a few seconds and then sputtered and died. What I didn't notice in the dark last night is that it's spitting engine oil out the exhaust, which seems pretty bad. I don't understand how this happened. I haven't run it in a few months, but last time I did, it ran flawlessly. I just cleaned out the cooling fins, too. I'm pretty distraught right now. Hoping someone has a quick fix for me as it will start snowing in 5 hours. Edited January 23, 2016 by tsmall07
lynnmor 7,847 #2 Posted January 22, 2016 Compression check first thing. You probably oil fouled the plugs causing it to die. Hard to say what is going on, maybe when you parked it the engine was still cold and a lot of oil found its way into the cylinder(s) instead of draining down. tsmall07 49 #3 Posted January 22, 2016 Any idea what spark plugs I need? I'd like to pick up a couple on my way home.

tsmall07 49 #5 Posted January 25, 2016 Well, I went out to start working on it and I bumped the starter to make sure the battery was still up and it started right up. Just let it run for 30-45 seconds and I was in business. I got a couple hours of pushing done. Weird issue. I'll check the compression sometime and report back.
oldredrider 2,553 #6 Posted January 25, 2016 Sounds like you may have had a stuck ring or two from sitting a while. After getting the engine hot they freed up.

Yamaha has been selling some snake oil called Ring Free. I suppose, under certain conditions, a ring can stick but with good oil and frequent oil changes my guess is that rarely happens.
