520H Might Be Flooded

Recommended Posts

I just installed my snow plow for the first time, got a new battery and went to start the 520H.  It started up, ran for a few seconds and then started to sputter and die.  It was pumping white smoke out of the exhaust.  I think I might have flooded it.  Is there any procedure for restarting a flooded engine or do I just wait a while and start again?  Any tips on getting it going in cold temps?  It's only in the 20s.  Not too bad.

I have three 520's.  I set the throttle at about 1/3.  Full choke.  The second they start, I push the choke off.  If the engine begins to die, I give a quick jab of choke.  In cold weather it might take 2 or 3 jabs.

I went to start it this morning and it does the same thing. What I didn't notice in the dark last night is that it's spitting engine out the exhaust, which seems pretty bad. I don't understand how this happened. I haven't run it in a few months, but last time I did, it ran flawlessly. I just cleaned out the cooling fins, too. I'm pretty distraught right now. Hoping someone has a quick fix for me as it will start snowing in 5 hours.  :(

I'm no mechanic, for the record.

I was always taught to let it sit a bit, for some of it to evaporate. Full throttle and no choke when you try again, to let it suck the excess fuel down into the cylinder where it belongs.  I am strictly guessing, but leaving throttle and choke wide open while it sits may let it dry out faster. I have removed the plug before and blew it dry with air, and blew air down the cylinder to help dry it out.

I hope you meant engine oil, not that is a lot better, but still better than pieces of the engine.
