Tune up info on a 1257

Recommended Posts

OK this may seem like I am lazy but I am not. For some reason trying to use the search feature on my cell phone is not an enjoyable experience. What I am trying to accomplish is tuning up two tractors Saturday after noon when I get home. First one is a 1257 and a 656. I would like to know the correct spark plug, filters, engine oil and rear end fluid for them. Does anybody know if carb rebuild kits are available at any local chains? And thanks in advance for helping out!

I don't know the air filter or spark plug numbers off the top of my head  i usually just take them to my local parts store and find a match. The kohler carb kits are usually easy to find at local small engine stores but when it comes to the tecumseh carbs i don't bother rebuilding them sense you can buy a whole new carb for 2$ more than a rebuild kit . Engine oil is usually i good quality 30wt oil for summer and 10w-30 for winter. Trans oil for the 656 80-90wt gear oil if i'm remembering correct should be the same for the 1257

Thanks for the info on the fluids. The air filter can be matched , never even thought about that. That really only leaves the spark plugs. I don't think the correct one is in the 1277.

This Kohler  manual lists a RH10 Champion spark plug.

H60 uses J17LM or RJ17LM Champion plug

HH60 uses J8C or RJ8C Champion plug

Wow, you were spot on! I actually bought the whole carb for $12 free shipping from amazon. Rebuild kit $10 plus shipping. This is why it pays to ask questions. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I just don't understand why they are so cheap. And they are all fairly similar in construction. Good score

But a comparable one for the 1257 is $50-$60? Just seems if one can be that cheap they could all be close to the same price.Do you use 80-90wt in the rear of your 1257?

I use about 1/4 Lucas tranny stop leak and the I think 80/90 the Lucas is great for the seals you can not get to. My Commando hubs are so bad that nothing I did they would not budge. So in that one I used 3/4 luces and the rest gear oil. It great stuff. So I like the blend it good for the gears and stops leaks. My 1257 was the same way it is all original  and I did not want to bust the hubs. so I did the same.no leaks.  Enjoy the ride.  Gary     B..............
