1988 312-8 Question

Recommended Posts

KC9KAS

Got a call from a fellow that picked up one of my cards at a show last fall.

The guy wanted me to work on his 312-8.

One of the things he didn't like was a previous owner put a long bolt on the left side so the lift handle would only go down so far. I have all the side panels off and I do not see any type of "height adjustment" other than the back wheels on a mowing deck.

I looked into the manuals an think it should have an adjuster.

Anyone shed any light on this for me?

If you can find a height adjuster from a parts tractor it will bolt right on.  You will need to cut the half circle holes in the 2 panels where the shaft comes thru.    I had to do this on a Work Horse.

I have an 87 and it has no adjuster. I never did understand that.

the cheaper tractors didn't have the adjuster, like my 308,bare bones and I guess the height adjuster was for the higher end models,as stated easy to add

My 87 310-8 did not have an adjuster , so I bought the parts and installed it . Did not have any problems. I wonder if it had something to do with WH doing away with the solid lift rod and going to the chain lift.

I don't think that's it because my 1986 308 didn't have it and my 1989 414 does,so does my 87 414,the 400 series were a higher end machine

I did the same on a 16 hp Work Horse. Easy enough. $10 0n eBay.

Be sure to get all the parts.

One other note - the height adjuster shouldnt be used to set mower deck height, that should be set with the adjusters on the deck wheels.

But for plowing snow or a mid mount grader blade, I think the dial-a-height is essential.

I know this is the 'official line' for mower decks on WHs, BUT I have gotten tons of use from my 310-8 with a 37" SD deck cutting heavy, heavy yard material using the dial-a-height to speed up the cutting process -- Just the extra inch or two that the deck is raised helps immensely with the grass load coming out of the mower and I can't tell any problems with cut quality (But then how can be commenting on cut quality when you are mowing 3 ft tall fescue/blue grass/clover?)
