Horse Fanatic 51 #1 Posted December 1, 2008 I recently bought a 520-H to rebuild. I started dissassembling it and noticed this repair to the frame, looks like it had been done recently as it's not even rusty. They welded 1/4" steel to the entire back side of the trans mounting plate, did a nice job welding it although because my cheap camera won't focus up close it's blurry. Anyway the only problem that I can see is it adds 1/4" to the distance between the two pullys but I imagine that would be insignificant. What's your opinion on this repair? Use it or change the frame? Thanks, Glenn
rustyoldjunk 127 #2 Posted December 1, 2008 if they done a good job on it i would leave it alone,i dont think the 1/4 will make any difference with the drive belt but the tractor will have a stronger frame.this seems to be a fairly common repair,if the wheel horse frame has a weak spot it seems to be where it bolts to the transaxle. Michael Bullington 5 #4 Posted December 2, 2008 i would use it also ...unless I had a frame just laying around Good luck
ol550 830 #5 Posted December 2, 2008 If all the sheet metal bolts up and fits I would use it as it is. Mike
pond195520032003 27 #6 Posted December 2, 2008 This is just my opinion only, but i would look for another frame (ebay or other) most of the repairs you see are on the inside on that part of the frame, not inbetween the transmission and frame looks like something other than the belt would not line up with this :hide:
Kelly 1,033 #7 Posted December 2, 2008 I'm with Greg on this one, the linkage to run the trans, has to pass this repair, and now is not correct, Bummer I just sold a 520 fri. and the guy is only going to use the trans out of it, he took it to Muncie, IN if you live near there I can get you his no. jusjeepn 59 #8 Posted December 2, 2008 Kelly I'd like to have his no. Pat
Horse Fanatic 51 #9 Posted December 2, 2008 I forgot about the linkage, I just looked at it and it is a turnbuckle, it seems to have more than enough adjustment in it to work. Thanks for the input so far, I appreciate it. Any more would be welcome.
Butch 194 #10 Posted December 2, 2008 I am trying to remember what parts it might had an effect on while I was taking my 314-8 apart knowing I might be making the frame repair and finding out that the plate should go inside. I don't know anything about the 520 but I think on my 314 by extending the frame would also have an effect on the hood tower or whatever the big piece of sheetmetal is that the hood lays down against which also has the dash panels that mount to it. But the hood tower I believe goes from the frame to part of the seat frame or near it. It might have been the fender bracing it bolted to. By extending it you would have to drill new holes in the tower by the seat bracket and there isn't much room left since the holes will be further back. That part of the hood tower was pretty flimsy to begin with and I had both end pieces broken off as it was and had new ends welded on. Maybe Toro changed the design for the 520. Maybe someone with these series of tractors can shed more light on what I'm trying to explain.
Docwheelhorse 2,740 #11 Posted December 2, 2008 If the tractor drives, stops and does everything that it should I would run it and ignore the repair. I suppose you could find a frame at your leisure---but why go thru all that work to swap everything over---as long as your linkages function OK I wouldn't bother. kpinnc 14,632 #12 Posted December 2, 2008 I agree with Tony. If you decide later to do a restore on this machine, then I'd just keep an eye out for a frame. Otherwise, I'd put that sucker to work! All of the affected linkages are adjustable, and they eventually all need adjusting anyway. If the rear fender fits, you've got no problems. Good luck! linen beige 15 #13 Posted December 2, 2008 I'm with Gator and Tony. If it works, why worry? BTW, adding a quarter inch to the frame length adds a half inch to the belt length guys. Sorry, couldn't resist.
