You hit the nail on the head. Some just don't count reverse.

The first 6 speeds were really 8 speeds....

Fritz, not at all a stupid question.

There's a ton to learn about these tractors and how Wheel Horse went about designing, building, numbering and equipping them. That's why we have this forum and a whole lotta guys willing to share what we've learned as we've gone along!

Never, ever hesitate to ask about anything - none of us were born with WH Manuals in our brains! :hide:

Oh, and since I didn't catch your earlier posts, :hide: !

Looks like you've got a nice little herd started for yourself! :horseplay:

The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. :hide::D I think the 4 speed and the 8 speed was for advertising. You don't say your 5 speed car is a 6 speed just because it has a reverse. :hide: Mike

With the "hi-lo" range on the tranny there were literally 2 different reverse speeds.

A car did not have such a feature. One speed of reverse is all it had.

Should have said truck. :hide: That would be 12 speeds if ya had a 5 speed with a two speed axle. :hide::D Mike

Fritz like everyone on here has already said...they are the same trans.

The hi/low transmissions came out in 1967 & were called 6 speeds back then.

I beleive they were called 6 speeds all the way up to 71/72...then they went with the 8 speed moniker untill the last new model...the "Classic" in 2007.

From 1935 to 1948 you could get a Columbia two speed overdrive rear axle on Ford, Mercury and Lincoln. :hide:

This turned a three speed (four if you count reverse.) into a six speed (eight if you count reverse in both ranges.)
