I'm looking for you wonderful folks here at :rs:to critic this new purchase.  Tell me what you think it may need or what possibilities there are for it.  I'm open to all suggestions and information.  It seems to be in good shape, and mostly complete.

I'm probably going to leave it as it is.  But the drive belt guard is all rust, and no paint.  What could I do with that?

Knock the rust down with a very light sanding...  :confusion-shrug:

then give it an oil bath, while you look for one in better condition.

You're going to  need a push button starter switch for the hole in the trans tunnel too.

s-l1600.jpgNot sure if this one is the same one for your application, but I'll send you the link.

I just noticed the rear tires. General Garden Tractor SS's. I remember that brand on our 64 604 when I was a kid.

Well to start with, working on the tractor to get it running nice.  Got some carburetor issues right now.  I think someone might have installed the tierods wrong?  The rod that holds the hitch on has been sawed off on both ends so I does and can't put a hitch on it. etc

Your tank stand is interesting.  I believe all 854s were key start only with no starter button (or hole).  Mine was that way when I bought it.  However, my tank stand had been ripped open around the gear shift lever, so I bought a '63 753 tank stand which had the extra starter hole. So, if your tank stand is original, I'm surprised that it has the extra starter hole.  Maybe your tractor is an early production model using the previous year tank stand?

You can get a new switch just like the one Craig posted at Napa

Think maybe some one might have cut the hole the key switch is in now?  Seems odd the hole is in part of the decal.

My original, unrestored 854 has the empty push button holes with key start and is an early production 854 as per the serial # ....just saying:)

Great looking Tractor!

Oh and as far as the rusty belt Guard.  Get some CLR and a scotchbrite pad, the CLR will take most of the rust away n probably get some of the factory paint, shining through

No, just regular Cole hersey key......Like a dummy, I have no pic of the key in the hole to show you.IMG_2684.thumb.JPG.131532880b6539921c2b5IMG_2683.thumb.JPG.fdc8da0c7df89a2f21d1aIMG_2685.thumb.JPG.ad42a2ea63d96c9c8445a

That's definitely a dandy. The 854's used a key switch and not a push button. The key switch did bear the full starter current though so you'd need to get the appropriate one. The ones with the push button starter were undoubtedly installed because they didn't have the proper key switch to handle the current. They could have installed a solenoid. No harm done. The tie rods are on wrong. They must have connected them from the backside on the steering shaft plate. Should be from the front with the nut on the back. They should connect to the spindles from below with the nut on the top. All simple fixes though. :)

      Hello All!

Added THREE tractors all at once yesterday(09/16/2025).  Two model 854, and one model 855.  The two 854 look pretty nice, but are not running right this minute  --does not look like much more than a little tinkering/refreshing after sitting for a long time.  The 855 was labelled a "parts" tractor, but except for it being Really well-used looking, it seems to be all there so I am not going to consider it out of play yet.  The two 854's have rear discharge mower  decks...one is a square style deck, the other the rounded style deck.

I think it is really nice that all three are basically the same machine, separated by one year, yet completely different styles--the end of one era and the beginning of another I guess.

There is an ID tag on the 855 (serial number 135166) but on the two 854 tractors, there is No tag under the steering like late models.  Are the tags in a different place on older machines?  Looking them over, I do not notice anything obvious.  The 854 with the lower Kohler engine serial number has the round style mover deck, while the one with the slightly higher engine serial number has the square style deck.

All for now!  Be well and stay safe.

As a retired 61-year-old who inherited 4 of my Grandfather's Wheel Horse tractors, I found a valuable resource in this forum. Here, I connected with Bob Parks (Racinbob), who at the time lived nearby and kindly agreed to help me identify all of them. I ended up keeping the 1964 Model 854 and sold the others. The 854 is a solid, primarily original tractor, and I've been using it since I was 6-years-old. I also had the RM-364 mower deck attachment, which had not been on the tractor for many years. Once again, this forum proved its worth as I could identify and obtain some attachment parts that I was missing. Last week, after some adjustments, I put the mower deck to use and mowed nearly an acre of grass without any issues. The sense of accomplishment in identifying and restoring the equipment was truly inspiring, and I felt like I was a kid again.

As someone who doesn't consider themselves 'mechanically inclined,' I've grown and learned much through this project. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all of those who guided me and showed me that with the right support, even the most daunting tasks can be tackled.

These belts have been hanging in my garage since last used I believe there off a 754 I used to have. Bought them new and didn't use much.
Don't know why I took them off. Some fraying on top in a few places from use, also don't know why but selling as is and photo'd. 20.00 shipped if you can use them.
PM for PayPal info or questions. 16" ID approx.
