Kohler Type 1 question

Recommended Posts

I've read that Kohler type 1 engines have some lubrication issues mainly when operated on hills or side hills my question is how to I determine if I have a Type 1 engine?  I'm asking because I recently purchased a 1974 C-160 which is my oldest Wheel Horse and intended to use it as a worker but would like to know if it has a Type 1 engine before putting it to work.

It does have the Type 1, unless it has been replaced along the way. The Type 2 was in production after Kohler found they had warranty issues about the mid '80s.The Type 1 is still a good engine but is only splash lubricated so best to keep it level.

Thanks for the reply, I was going to use it for snow removal but my driveway is hilly so the C-160 will go into hibernation.

I personally never had a problem, obviously you need to keep the oil properly filled if you are down a 1/2 a quart you may have problems on a 20-30% grade also parking it on a slope and letting the oil drain down the pan probably not a good idea.

Unless someone replaced your engine with a twin you should have a K341.  The series 1 and 2 are only KT twins. 17,19 and 21hp versions  I've never had a problem with KT's either
