Recommended Posts

Got W/H 10hp 8 speed lawn tractor. Anyone know what oil goes in the fill hole under the seat for the rear axle?

A good 80-90wt. They come from the factory I think a 90-140 in them. 80-90wt is just fine. Your not out there running around a speedway at 200 mph or are a big gravel pit truck hauling several tons in 100 degree weather.

Whatever you put in is probably better than what is in there now. I bet you have a mixture of oil and water that looks pretty nasty.  I would drain the current oil, (allen head drain plug in the bottom just in front of and to the left of the draw bar hitch extension), then put in about a quart and a half of diesel oil or kerosene. Run it around the yard for about ten minutes and drain again, this time lifting the front end of the tractor so that all the oil/mix gets over the hump in the middle of the transmission. Refill with two quarts of good transmission oil as described above, Fill through either the dipstick hole (if it has one) or remove the shifter and pour in there. The 1/2" plug on the side is not for filling, and putting fluid in there will leave you about 10 ounces short. Removing one of the two bolts from the fender pan bracket that goes into the top of the tranny will aid in letting the air out as the new oil goes in. Install a new shifter boot (main source of water intake) while you are at it.
I see you joined back in October and this is your first post, so :WRS: How about posting some pictures of the horse.

Thanks guys. And yes I syphoned about 2 quarts of straight water out of there. About 48 years of condensation.

Rescued from dad's scrap pile. Rebuilt the carb.started right up. Just a plugged needle valve. Deck was shot but I can weld so I started looking for deck parts. Guys were crazy. Bidding wars for parts! Thought it was destined to be a go kart or I would have to retrofit a different brand deck. But found a John Deere tractor owner who had my deck (one year newer?)under it. Didn't know what he had. Paid $75 and $75 to freight ship it to me. Snapped right in. Looks like some rollers were added to it. Dad bought it in '83 junked it in 88. Can't kill it. Took wheel bar off old deck put on this one after I removed back rollers.
