car 24 #1 Posted November 18, 2015 Hi, I've got a question. I've been watching for a good deal on a WH. Mostly on Craiglist adds. I've seen several adds with rust spots on the hood. Is this from setting out in the elements? I've owned WH most of my life and have never had this problem before.
doc724 925 #2 Posted November 18, 2015 I will agree. However paint was never WH strong point. All mine have been kept indoors but one was in the sun when the garage doors were open, paint still faded. I don't think WH ever used any primer under the finish coat. Tractors could also have been kept under an open shed and birds may have been roosting there. Bord poop is pretty corrosive.
callum12 257 #3 Posted November 18, 2015 well the hoods/bonnets are steel, all you need is a scratch and rust can form, it will then lift the paint around the scratch. my WH was sat out in the elements for 3 years and a lot longer before that. mine needed very little work, in fact all i had to do is fix the previous owners bodge job. callum
Tankman 3,523 #4 Posted November 18, 2015 (edited) Elbow grease, sand. I like the Rustoleum Regal Red rattle cans.Color match seems excellent and the Restoleum Regal Red holds up well. Usually on the shelf at Home "Cheapo" 'bout $4.00 a can. Edited November 18, 2015 by Tankman
DougC 2,643 #5 Posted November 18, 2015 I'm no body man / paint man but I bought an 88 520H from an older gent. who got spray happy without near enough prep work................ Now I will have to sand / strip all the paint down to the metal and start over. You can make it look worse with a bad paint job than it would if it had not been painted at all.............

That is so true. It's much better to leave it original than botch it up with a crummy paint job. I attached a pic of one I saw at an auction a while back. It's much worse than it looks in the photo. It looked liked someone just rattle canned over the rust and dirt with no prep at all. I didn't stick around to see it sell, so I don't know what it sold for.

You see all sorts of obvious "lipstick on a pig" garden tractors on , over-spray on tires and black tape on seats, paint runs and say "RESTORED",
