Retro/patina paint job

Recommended Posts

Brian01

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has ever done a repaint, then sanded parts out to bring back some of the patina?

What do you think of the idea? If you have done this, I'd love some pictures...

I kind of tried it out earlier, sanded some ofthe bolts back shiney with just a little paint here and there, done the same with the front axle pivot nut..lol...didn't want to get to carried away until I knew what it would look like...like the idea, but would love to see pics where someone has done such to like the fenders, frame, hood , etc..

I'm looking at a 702 that I'm considering doing just that to the entire tractor.  Tractor has been repainted and I plan to rub out the newer paint to bring the original back.
Remove most all of the new paint and bring back the age.
If I buy it, we'll see how it goes.

Cool, that's what I'd like to see...the hood and fenders n such on mine is primered underneath my new paint, so dunno how it would turn out really, because I took most of mine to bare metal. I don't remember priming the frame though as you can see where my weight has been hanging on the front and rubbing the axle there's no primer there.

But sanding the non primered parts will look pretty good I think though, like the axle pivot nut turned out.  Hate to mess up a new paint job, but I want Patina dang it! lol

I would be interested in seeing how they turned out as well.......... If it becomes the fashion,  I could leave the one I was going to paint the way it is now...............:)

Sanding will take a lot off real fast and burn through all the layers if not careful.  You can also try lacquer thinner/acetone/paint thinner on a rag.  Brillo pads and maybe super fine wet sandpaper-1000 grit or so.

Don't wunna do to much right now, just suttle things here and there...might take the seat down to bare metal, then a little red over it then do it that way as well...as of now my seat has several layers of paint on it...2 or so primer, then black, the antique white..

Aircraft paint stripper will take it all off in a few seconds!  ;)

If it were mine, I'd use a DA, sand it lightly where a few spots shine here and there, then oil it up.

953 nut
:text-coolphotos:   Mike's "D" has plenty of patina, but you can still see too much RED to make it weathered, my survivor 953 is almost there with the exception of the front rims!  :ychain:
Engine leaks enough oil to prevent it or the frame from rusting!         :ROTF:

lol why is that?

I like your RJ, with the patina of the frame with hood n such painted. Makes me wish I hadn't repainted my frame.

This hole Tractor just looks "too good", know what I mean?

953 nut

I remembered seeing an article on doing the patina paint job and went to my Street Rodder Magazine library and found it.   :woohoo:   Even better, I was able to find it on line so I didn't have to scan it and get in trouble for copyright infringement! Read and enjoy.
