front swept axle

Are there any other advantages to haveing the front swept axle other the to use a bigger mower deck? I was thinking maybe more steble or a bigger foot print? Redoing my 310-8 and was thinking of maybe adding one but dont use the tractor to mow with and dont just want to spend extra money, athough I think it would be something unique and differant.

The swept forward axle will give you a little longer wheelbase, plus heavy 1" spindles, for better results with a loader or some other heavy front attachment. I think its also wider but cant be sure on that from memory. Unless you swap in the reduction steering gears and heavy tie rods Im not sure what other improvements it would make for your money.

They are a lot of money, if you don't realy need it, $200++ used and most used one's that you can buy are well worn, I know I have 2 set ups, that I'm taking the best from both to make one nice one, and I have 2 gear reduction steering set ups tring to make one good one, I priced the gear reduction steering, NOT the front axle from Toro, and it came to over $400 and yes the axle is wider, I think by 3" total, also the spindle rides on a flat torinton bearing between it and the axle, also the wheels use tapered roller bearings like a car. just my 2 cents

I wanted to do the swept axel upgrade, but dang thems are pricey!

I have seen the upgrade axel kit, swept axel upgrade and somebody asked if a GT14 axel would fit under a C, gets me to thinking I have a C195 front axel hmmmm.... I wonder if itll fit under one of my 160s hmmmmm now that would be a upgrade

Unless one falls in my lap for a good price I wount really push to do a conversion. Just thought it would be cool on a 310 and was woundering if there would be any real benefits to it. Never know with me I might just find one and do it

You don't NEED the reduction steering. My 1991 520 does not have it, but still has the swept axle and heavier tie rods/spindles.

Unless you're using a loader or other heavy front attachment, the reduction steering won't be an advantage. As far as a mower, etc..., the reduction steering is actually something you DON'T want, unless you enjoy mowing with a land yacht.

Why would NOT want the gear reduction steering? Iv never heard any one with the newer models that came with this steering complain? Im thinking this would be a super cool addition? Can you shead any more light on the pro and cons to the reduced steering? Thanks

I thought the reduction steering started in 91, could have been a mid year change? The 88 and 89 520-HC had the swept axle with heavy tie rods. Then in 90 the 520-H and 8 both had the swept axle with heavy tie rods and the HC had been dropped from the lineup. In 1991 there was only the 520-H and it came with reduction steering along with the swept axle and heavy tie rods. Thats what I thought anyway.

Think Ive only seen one person mention he disliked mowing with reduction steering but kind of liked it myself. Put a steering ball on the left side of the wheel so I could spin it around while working the hydro control with the other hand. Personal preference I guess. :D
