Hey guys and gals,
I'm new to this. So please excuse my ignorance, I recently picked this up for a 100.00, it was labeled as a suburban and has the hood, but when I started taking apart, I noticed the trans looked like an RJ, but the fron axle looks like a suburban. Also the shift leaver goes 180 degrees L/R and doesn't seem to go into gear? Pics attached, Appreciate the help.Have to redo the carb on the honda motor, rust in the fuel tank, Also was thinking about putting the

That's a Suburban. The 5010 trans differs from the 5003 used on RJ's only in the cast tab the brake band is bolted to. The 5003 is vertical, the 5010 is at a 45 degree angle. Your's is a 5010. As far as the shifter, provided the ring on the shifter is intact the dog point set screw is probably broken or at least needs to be adjusted.

Racin Bob,
Do you mean the ring that is internal on the shift lever, and the set screw on the front of the collar external?

That tractor is what's left of a 1961 suburban 401. That 551 in your pics is the only mid engine tractor with a 2 piece trans.
Yes,that's what RacinBob is referring to. Loosen the dogpoint set screw (external) right in front of the shifter and pull the shifter out. Then you can see what is going on with it. The shifter also hinges on that set screw which keeps it in place. There is a small roll pin that attaches that "ring" (internal) to the shift lever which could be missing or broken.
