D160 repower

Recommended Posts

tractorhogg

I have a D160 that I took an Onan out of and a D160 with a Kohler single. The Kohler powered D160 has a bad axle bearing and will need the rear case split to repair it. I would like to put the Kohler along with the engine plate in the Onan powered tractor, is there anything that I have not considered in this swap. I do plan on repairing the other D160, but this allows me two running D160s. Thanks guys. Alain

Hello Tractorhogg,
I am doing a onan p216  to briggs and Stratton vanguard v twin 23 hp swap from small engine warehouse. It is a nice kit and I am glad I bought it.

I'm sure you will have a strong and sweet running motor in your (??) tractor, and in the case of the Onan powered tractors swapping to a Vanguard is a good choice for both power and financial considerations. I'm switching ID plates and hope to have everything on my Onan D160 be original to a Kohler powered D160. I have three D160s two Kohler powered, one Onan, that I hope to make into three Kohler powered tractors.

I'm not a pro on D's but the main difference will be wiring i think the voltage regulator might be different between the kohler and onan and the ingintion  switch may be different too. I think you will love a 16Hp kohler powered D. Good luck getting Franks old D160 going

Thanks Slammer. It had a bad head, I could have repaired it but I came across a really nice one cheap. I figured on the regulator and switch, I couldn't see much else. The Onan had a oil pressure gauge that I may switch out for an hour meter. I have another kohler engine I can build as well. The Onan D160 is in really good shape, so I figured I could put the Kohler in the Onan tractor, then repair the rear axle and build another Kohler for Franks old tractor. In the end I would have three kohler power D160s. BTW, do you happen to know where Frank got this tractor.

I kind of figured Frank for a silver-tongued devil. I think I could do well taking his left overs or passed on tractors
