Bigt31 8 #1 Posted November 1, 2015 Happy Halloween fellow Horsers. I just bought my first 520-8.I got a heck of deal on it.I paid 700.00 for it.It didn't come with a deck.I am having a problem with it though. The transmission seems to work fine other than the fact that when you put it in to gear it seems to drag in to gear, for lack of a better word.I looked underneath, and the shift boot was loose, and there was lots of leaves grass, and other crud around the shift ball.I've tried a couple of different lubricants, and they seemed to have helped a little, but not alot.Has anybody ever had this problem,or does anybody have any suggestions. Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks for reading my lost. Sorry about that last sentence. Thanks for reading my post.

Bigt31 8 #3 Posted November 1, 2015 I didn't take the side cover off,and look at it closely, but I felt it with my fingers, and it feels pretty snug.I'll take the cover off tomorrow, and check it out better.I didn't really think about the belt though after I seen all the crud around the ball.I will check it better tomorrow. Thanks for the input.I appreciate it.
Racinbob 11,919 #4 Posted November 1, 2015 I'm not quite following you when you say 'drag into gear'. Is it that the shifter doesn't feel right? If so you may need to snug up the dog point setscrew holding it in place. Loosen the jam nut and snug it up with a 1/8" allen wrench just to the point where you feel resistance shifting it then back off a fuzz and tighten the jam nut. If you mean when you let the clutch out it could be the belt or a key is sheared. It could be the input pulley or an axle hub key. Keep in mind when you remove the belt cover that the belt probably won't stop and the gears will grind when you shift. It needs the cover to stop the belt. Racinbob 11,919 #5 Posted November 1, 2015 Just thought of another thing. If you mean the clutch pedal seems slow to engage the belt it could be the damper. I believe 520-8's came with a damper that just caught the idler arm just before the belt tightened. Then Toro came out with a retrofit kit (14-5159) that utilized a strut to push the idler arm tight. This might be on your 520. They also had a kit (104-5095) that utilized a damper and spring. Their intent is to ease the belt engagement and prevent wheelies. I had the latter on my 2005 Classic and hated it. It's now in the parts cabinet and I use only the spring like Wheel Horse used for decades.
Bigt31 8 #6 Posted November 1, 2015 Thanks for the input guys.Yes,the problem is in the shifter itself. When you move the shifter in to gear it Dosen't go smoothly. It feels like its dragging.I think you got me on the right track Racinbob.I was going to try adjusting the set screw, but the head of the screw is broke off.I guess I'll have to take it apart, and try to get the screw out. Thanks again fellows. bmsgaffer 2,053 #7 Posted November 9, 2015 Its an hex-keyed (allen wrench) setscrew... so just double check that it is really broke off. There is no "head" to speak of... good luck!
