wheelhorse 655 or 702?

Recommended Posts

harvesttime16

got for 300.00, was told that the original owner couldn't afford the mower deck with the horse, so he got the blueprints from the WH dealer and built it himself out of stainless steel. What i'm interested in is what model it should be. I thought 655 had a square hood.

Front axle proves its pre '63.  702 might be a good guess.

I think I'll keep the 655 decal and call it a rare bird. I don't see many around. Thanks for all the comments.

My 2 cents from what I've tried to learn from those that know:

Because of the gas tank:
633
653
753
754
854

And then because of the Kohler
753
754
854

And then I'm stumped.
Guys, please correct me and/or add to!

I'm thinking that's a multi year. The left side looks like a 701. The single pulley screams 702 but it's probably a transplant. Definitely no later than a 62. I think the hood is a couple years later.

Dennis, the 701 and 702 and 62-63 Lawn Rangers also had that style gas tank, and the 633 was Kohler powered. (It used a unique updraft Tillotson carb) The 701 and 702 were also Kohlers.

In the pictures it appears that it has the separate dash plate on the fuel tank which would have been consistent with the 62 models.

My money is on it being a 702 with a scrounged belt guard. They were the same part number.

I'm changing my story :) and agreeing with Jason. I don't think the 701 had a parking brake lever :eusa-think:

I'm with Jason also 702, flag brake pedal and hood stand has no cut out for the lift arm.

Seems unanimous, I'll make it a 702. New to restoring and want to get it right. Thanks for all your input, I hope to be at the Arendsville, PA show next year.

Not one person said anything about the extra long hood? almost looks to have about a 4" section added at the nose, as for the rest of the tractor 99% sure it's a 702 even has the correct no bump starter/gen belt guard, I'd like more pics of the hood

:text-yeahthat:   Kelly's right...
now I see the added piece there, center of the hood.
Almost looks like they sectioned another hood to add the piece, wonder what that was all about?
:dunno:

That's why I mentioned a later hood. I was thinking an 854 hood. I think Kellys talking about the piece added an the bottom where it attaches to the frame. But I am seeing what you're talking about now.

Interesting about the mower deck, but very skeptical. It would cost quite a bit more to make a one-off deck (designed to be made on  a production line) out of stainless versus buying the complete from WH.

If he did, that's crazy! Does a magnet stick to it?
