Snowthrower Grease Nipple

Recommended Posts

While getting my snowthrower (model 79360)  ready to go into storage last April the grease nipple came off the right side by the drive shaft and idler pulleys.
I couldn't get the thing back in.
Every time I threaded it,  it would grab like it wasn't tracking properly and I didn't want to apply to much force as I was worried about stripping the thread.
I can turn it maybe 1/2 turn before it grabs and requires more force.
It would also track in the direction of the blue arrow  (in photo)  -  up and to the left.  I was sure it should go back in,  in the direction of the yellow arrow - flush to the side of the housing.
Now I have to deal with this and I've just discovered the grease nipple on the left side is missing also so I have no reference.

Should the grease nipple thread in the direction of the blue arrow or yellow arrow.

Thanks

Did the zerk break off or just "unthread" itself?
Thought maybe some of the (broke off) threads are in the way.
Try "re-tapping" it.

99% sure it's just an unthread issue
But hadn't considered the alternative.  I'll have a closer look tomorrow.
Thanks

The threads on the inside should be OK. Take the retainer off, slide it down the shaft and chase the threads starting on the inside. A 1/4"-28 fine thread bolt might do it if that is what the thread is. Reform that first thread rather than cutting it with a tap because you don't have much metal to work with.

Thanks gwest.

Once I could see how the grease fitting was supposed to thread into the retainer felt much more comfortable applying
the necessary pressure to thread it all the way in. Now it's off to princess auto for the other fitting.
