Ranger 800 no spark

Recommended Posts

HELP!   I just got this Ranger 800 for the grandson.... BUT there's no spark.   I don't understand the wiring of the Tecumseh motor model TVM195.
There's 2 wires on the right side, RED with a fuse and a Green.   On the left side there are 2 wires, one goes to the ground contact on the throttle
and the other is just hanging there with a bullet type connector.  Since there is a ground switch on the throttle I'm thinking this is a replacement motor.
There is a safety switch on the clutch linkage but no wires go to it.  Looks like the tractor has been nicely rewired.
So if I knew what the motor wires were for I could probably get it running.  Where can I get the wiring diagrams for the tractor and motor?
TNX,
Joe

Don't think we have wiring diagrams for either.

The TVM195 is definitely not original to the tractor. This wiring diagram is appropriate for a TVM220 so may be some help.

What is the model number of the tractor? Should be an aluminum ID plate on it somewhere.

:text-coolphotos:   Judging by your statement I presume you have done this but, have you disconnected the ground wire on the throttle plate and tried to start it?

From the looks of that engine, I would say there is a set of points under that flywheel along with a condenser. I would do what is suggested above and pull that
wire from the throttle plate and see if it will fire.

Well, I had to see what was under the flywheel ......... annd it is ...........  POINTS & CONDENSER!  Wahoo!   Way to go HOWIE!   I know how to work on those.  I was worried it was one of those expensive Tecumseh electronic ignitions since it had all those wires coming from under the flywheel.   Besides points there was more under the flywheel ... see that small tan thing ... baby mouse.   Now at the kitchen table you can see where the 4 wires go.... one to the charging coil and three to the points!  WHY three ?  One will be enough when it goes back together.  Anyone know what the resistance of the coil should be?  This one is 7820 ohms spark plug to ground.  And primary is 1.5 ohms.

I would just keep the one that runs to the ignition switch. The one picture showed one to the throttle plate, that one not needed. Can't answer
about the ohms on the coil, I have a coil and condenser tester I always used. Had different readings on the meter.
Coils do go bad sometimes but a lot of times new points and condenser takes care of it. Might as well check it out now.

IT RUNS!   It runs but needs carb work.  I replaced only the points and removed the extra wires.  Started right up but the carb needs gone over.  The float bowl was clean so I didn't mess with it.    Tomorrow is another day.

This evening I removed the low speed jet and sprayed carb cleaner into it.  That may have helped .... after adjusting both the low and high speed needles it will now idle in 3rd gear up hill.  It actually runs pretty good though noisy.

I cannot find an ID plate.   I think the model number is 2-0211 if it's a 1972 and 2-0230 if it's a 1973.  What do you think?

See if there is a plate on the transmission.

1972 used a Peerless model 617
1973 used a Peerless model 635

Garry

The 600-Series should have the number stamped into the front of the case around where the shifter goes into it.

Got it!   Peerless model 635 ........... so it's a 1973.   Sure doesn't look that old!  Thanks Garry.
