jeremygibbs42 3 #1 Posted September 30, 2015 Hi everyone, I recently joined this forum and had posted before about a noise coming from the PTO of my 312-8 in which I was able to fix it with the help of members responses. I am all new to wheel horses and especially this 312-8. The motor seems to be running well. I recently printed out the owners manual. I wanted to basically do a tune up and was looking to buy a new air filter, pre filter, spark plug, and change oil. I was wondering should I replace anything else for maintenance? I was on ebay and saw that I could get new spark plug, breaker points and condenser all together. Should I change the breaker points and condenser. I am not even sure as to how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
MalMac 1,332 #2 Posted September 30, 2015 It never hurts to change points and condenser. Worn points can cause running problems as well as a bad condenser can cause problems. Changing them is not hard. Down load a Kohler service manual and follow it. You can down load it right here from Red Square or other sites. You also will get help from right here. There are a number of members on here that will jump right in and help, all you need to do is ask.
oldredrider 2,553 #3 Posted September 30, 2015 Remember, a 312 Magnum doesn't have points or condensor. Magneto ignition and timing.
slammer302 2,156 #4 Posted September 30, 2015 I believe the early 312's had K series
oldredrider 2,553 #5 Posted September 30, 2015 You are correct. O P stated a K 301 but just wanted to throw that out there so no $ is thrown away!
jeremygibbs42 3 #6 Posted October 1, 2015 Ok, thanks for the response. I have the earlier K series K301 (1986). Thanks for the info I will order the condenser and points. Do i need to check the timing after changing the points? Also I saw in the service manual that it recommends a .20 spacing. Is there a tool to use for the spacing? Thanks
MalMac 1,332 #7 Posted October 1, 2015 Use a automotive feeler gauge. Follow the service repair manual and you should have no problem. It's not difficult.
tunahead72 2,543 #8 Posted October 1, 2015 ... Also I saw in the service manual that it recommends a .20 spacing ... Careful with those measurements and units, points gap should be .020", or something very close to that. What part of Pennsylvania are you from?
