I have a 1979 c161 B&S twin 8sp that I  bought the correct toro belt for from  my toro dealer, dealer double checked to be sure,I made sure that all the belt guards , guides, wires, covers are in place and adjusted. when I push in on the clutch for just a gear change every things ok but if I leave the clutch pushed in for more than a few seconds it starts to buck and lurch foreward even though that when I checked with the belt cover off the idler pully was at the end of its travel . if I should have posted [n transmission section would the moderators please move. Thanks in advance for any help.    Skip

Sorry, Bucking tractor

With the belt cover off and the clutch pedal pushed was the belt still moving? There is a little metal tab on the idler pulley bracket that touches the belt when the pedal is mashed and stops the belt.
What belt did your dealer give you?

tomorrow if its not raining I'll take the belt cover back off again and double check metal tab and get the number off of the belt, threw plastic bag away the belt came in and wasn't smart enough to write it down. thanks for your reply.   Skip

Sparky, I was able to get the belt guard off and take a look at the tab you mentioned, it actually kind of pinches the belt against a flat piece of metal. unfortunately all I can read on the belt is wheel horse and the last digits that I think are 4285,the belt is a new one and according to my OLD wheel horse dealer Stanelys in Marshall MI it was the number he pulled off the micro fiche (not sure of spelling ) any help really needed.   Skip

According to the :wh: belt use chart in our downloads section a '79 C-161 8 speed would use a # 10-7939 which was replaced by the 93-9808; an 82" heavy duty "A" belt. Once you have tried Sparky's suggestions if your belt isn't working well take it to Tractor Supply and compare it to a Kevlar A-82 belt.
