Transmissions

I am still looking for that elusive second horse with a hydro. I do have a question or a few. Do the hydro's wear out like an engine and then require a "rebuild". How long do they last - or should they last. Even a well maintained engine will wear eventually and need rebuilt. Do the transmissions have parts that wear out eventually - like the rings in the engine?

They do however it really depends on what type of hydro you have and how well it has been maintained. I have several with the Sundstrand hydro units that were typically found on mist machines until the late 70's. They are as you can imagine 30 to 40 years in age and still perform slightly less then they would have new. They are rebuildable and I have a contact that can machine new parts to OEM spec. The Eatons are also good but in my opionion not as well built as the Sundstrands. Eatons are also more difficult to rebuild. But again depending on how well they are maintained, they sould be usable for quite a long time.

I think 1980 was the year WH swapped over to Eaton Hydro trannys. I have had better luck with the Eaton setups in my mid 80's-90's tractors but its probably because its in a newer tractor and more than likely will have less hours than a Sundstrand equiped tractor from the 70's or even the 60's.
