Melt Down!

I had a little electrical melt down today on the C-121 at the ignition switch the two wires that looked to be melting were the wire to the voltage regulator and the green wire from the volt gage I believe I'm not sure if I have a bad ignition switch or regulator problem or if the wires just shorted out on each other

Make sure all of your battery cable connections are good, too.I had mine fry on a 312-8.  The battery cable connector was almost gone from corrosion.  I would check all of the connections, including grounds.  something was causing too much resistance.

While you're in there if it has an ammeter check those connections too.. lots of current goes thru there and they are known to corrode up and melt stuff

Thanks for the replies I have checked the battery cable connections and they looked good but have not checked the volt meter connections and I'm going to replace the ignition switch because it was very rusted and corroded 103990 is the part # I think can anyone tell me if that's right

I'm betting rust/corrosion creating resistance creating heat.   New switch and wiring!  You could cut one off another parts tractor but whether you go new or used pack some di-electric grease into every cavity to keep moisture out.  If used clean all contacts as best you can first!

You can use this, no problem.  You can take these apart with a small screwdriver, and get closer to the correct matches.  I used the waterproof/shrink crimp connectors(Forney 54826 Connector, Heat Shrink, 14-16 AWG) , and I think it is fine. It was also an excuse to get a new tool (Titan 11477 Ratcheting Wire Terminal Crimper).  I ordered them on amazon.  Napa also has the connector. There are some videos on you tube that explain the packard 56 or delphi connectors.  You can get the connectors at napa or other auto parts or marine place, too.

I'm not a 100% for sure yet but i think my problem was the volts gauge being loose and very corroded and broken a little i'm trying sum plastic epoxy on it and it look like a battery has exploded in this thing at one time because their looks like battery acid has been all over the place

I don't think a problem at the voltmeter or anywhere else is going to create a hot spot on the ignition switch connector. The poor connection between the wire terminals and the switch terminals have to take the blame.

New switch and wires should do you.  Don't forget to apply something to protect your new shinny, low resistance non heating connections!

Something else you might want to look at is TC-11.  I think many WH owners could benefit from some.  (now I got to go buy some stocks!)

No you are NOT!  I'm guessing most folks don't know what TC-11 is.  You at least asked!  I bumped into it maybe 10 years ago in a local hardware store!  Pretty neat stuff but let me bail out and you take over:

I really like the stuff!  Just seems like they aren't busy promoting it!  Or maybe just not to us little guys?  Don't know but I sure use it!
